EXCLUSIVE:

Tottenham to land Sam Johnstone on free transfer after Man Utd decision

EXCLUSIVE: The England international is attractive to Daniel Levy and the Spurs recruitment team as he's out of contract at West Brom this summer, and while United were keen too, they're happy with their 'keeper options

Spurs are set to win the race to sign West Brom keeper Sam Johnstone.

The north Londoners are now favourites to land the England international after Manchester United decided not to press ahead with their interest. The Old Trafford giants already have David de Gea and Dean Henderson on their books and with those two already going head-to-head there Johnstone feels he needs to be closer to first-team action.

That means Spurs are now likely to win the race as the club is in need for A-list back-up to Hugo Lloris.

Johnstone is attractive to Daniel Levy and the club’s recruitment team as he is out-of-contract this summer and can leave the Hawthorns on a free following four years at the Black Country club. With Lloris hurtling towards his 36th birthday later this year, there is a need for a quality reinforcement and Johnstone is seen as providing it ahead of Pierluigi Gollini whose appearances this season have been restricted to cup games.

Lloris signed a deal committing his future to Spurs until 2024 but Johnstone, at the age of 29, is seen as providing both genuine competition and a solid alternative to the legendary France international.

While I'm unconvinced that he's good enough to ever become our first-choice GK:
  • He'd be a solid back-up.
  • He's home-grown.
  • He's free.
Sign him up! :)

I watched him playing for Villa a few times a few years ago and I must say I was quite impressed.

Don't know that there's anything particularly new here, but Dan Kilpatrick rates this deal as "very likely."

would be a good piece of business and for once a early window signing

For once? If early is before pre-season, we had two right at the start of July a couple of seasons back (19/20) with Ndombele and Clarke. Wanyama (16/17) was in June, and Janssen was the 2nd week of July. A little further back (15/16), Wimmer was in May, Trippier in June, and Alderweireld at the start of July.

Appears this one is dead and we need a Fraser Forster thread instead.

Us being linked, doesn't mean it's a given we're interested. Forster's agent will need to get his name out there.

I really don't see any kind of logic in signing a 34 year old goalie when we have a perfect opportunity of signing Johnstone on a free at only 29.

I'm not sure I believe the Forster rumour at all.

Perhaps Johnstone has been offered #1 somewhere
