Don't see him coming to us

Great prospect but would he want to be a bench warmer which is what he would be

King, Woodgate, Dawson, Corluka - Bassong would be cover and can't see him interested in that

I prefer him to Dawson and would prefer him to play above Corluka at CB when King cannot play

Disagree that he is better then Dawson. Dawson was superb last season and back to his old self. Whether he plays like that this season we will just have to wait and see.

Bassong reminds me of Distin, great athlete, his pace gets him out of his appalling postioning and there is always a tendency to do something stupid in a game to cost you a goal.

I certainly don't. And you'd prefer him to Corluka? Seriously? Every time I've seen him his positioning has been shocking—he's like Kaboul with pace. The main reason he's looked good is because of the bozos he lines up with.

I'd say that's more the reason he's not looked like a world beater. I've always been impressed with him and it's the clowns he's been playing wit that mess up.

I'd prefer him to Corluka as a direct replacement for King, rather than making two positional changes by having Corluka at CB and bringing in Hutton, because I also believe Corluka and Lennon works better than Hutton and Lennon.

He looked like the Toon's best player.

However I would have looked like the Toon's best player as well!

He's definitely got the potential to be a great CB. The foundations are there, now if Harry can polish him, we'll have a good player on our hands.

Also, I believe he'll cost less than JJB or Davies, not being English.

He is, but by no means bombproof.

As for Bassong, a lot of rough edges, and some of his positioning has been very poor, but there's something there. For £5m, maybe, if we didn't have Dawson and Dervite (not to mention Charlie). Assuming Ledley's able to play in the majority of league games next season, CB is hardly a priority.

I am surprised at your last comment SS based on previous posts you have made to the effect that every game we get out of Ledley is a bonus . Early last season I believe you said that we should not even select him because him being in and out of the team was disruptive to continuity. Even a few weeks ago you said Keane was a better choice as captain because Ledley's career could end any time. I disagreed with you on both points and I still think that even if we only get 15 games a season from him he adds such a lot that we should take whatever he can give us.

One thing is clear - we should have cover for Ledley. The main thing he has given us over the years apart from excellent reading of the game is his pace. Dawson and Corluka do not offer that and I was under the impression that Dervite is on his way out. In fact I don't think Corluka looks comfortable at CB. We cannot surely say that cover in that position is not important ?

As for whether Bassong is the man maybe if he is brought in to understudy and learn from Ledley maybe he is worth a punt.

For £5m I would rather get Micah Richards, a superb athlete who with a bit of good coaching would be outstanding for us in the future, pity he hates us

Bassong sounds Scum bound though

It would be interesting to know what Bassong's wages are at the Toon, because knowing them they are probably ridiculous.

On this point I find it funny that Newcastle are going to have to part pay players wages for other Premiership teams just to get the full whack off of their books.

Lovely!!!

I know we have 4 centre backs but only king has any real pace. When his injured/rested I wouldn't mind bassong covering. Now that it looks like Johnson won't join us we would have Charlie competing with Hutton at right back. All we then need is suitable left back cover (i see bale as a left midfielder)

If we could get bassong for no more then 6m i think we should go for it

Basson apparently is one of their lowest paid players, hence why Newcastle really doesn't want to sell him. Depends how much power a player got I guess, Newcastle fans says he'll get a contract renegotiation this summer though.

If we are looking for a King back up then Bassong does seem like the best solution out there. I'm a bit worried about getting too many centre backs though, cause I like Dervite and want him to get game time with us. Although all our CBs except King are slowish and more of the towering kind like Dervite.

For £10m, I think we can do better. Arsenal apparently are buying Vermaelen for £10m. Will they spend any more on defenders?
