Starting to worry about Lamela. You'd say "its early and he's young" but we did pay £30m for him. £30m you pay for a player that's the finished article, not one you have to nurture and improve. A player like that is £10-15m.

I do think/hope he'll come good for us, but so far, barring one simple pass to Paulinho at Cardiff, he's done pretty much nothing. Not even glimpses of any pace, accurate shooting or incision.

On the match, fuck knows how we kept a clean sheet tonight!
my thoughts exactly. I'm not expecting 10 goals and 5 assists already but i have not sen him beat a man, have not seen him test the keeper with a decent shot and i have not seen anything indicative of a 30 mill player. ozil was only 12 mil dearer..............

so as I understand it , some people would actually prefer playing all "sexy entertaining football" and finishing fourth like Arsenal than playing "ugly boring football" and win the title like united

Does anyone else get the impression nobody will pass to Lamela?

All this chat about lamela, have you seen bale's RM performance. he cost 85m and he has been well...... dross for them. And they paid 85m but I bet they believe he will come good just like Modric was voted worst ever summer buy last year but he is pulling the strings for them.

The question is not whether we can be successful playing this brand of football. We can and we are being. Its not whether we are boring. We are. Very.

Its whether that is the route down which we do want to seek our success. Because what is for certain is that successful football and entertaining football arent incompatible ideals. Do we really want the joyless procession of ground out 1-0 victories which I am convinced AvB style aspires. For me, no. Im sure if we could guarentee success with this formula people would take it and maybe I would in the short term.

But hand on heart I dont want to watch a Jose Mourinho style of joyless football at Tottenham.

AVB often talks about wanting to play exciting attacking football and anyone who saw his Porto team will have an idea of the direction he's aiming for. I think the problem is that some of our players are just not playing to a high enough level off the ball and it leads to our attacks breaking down. I'll be worried if we're not scoring more goals by Christmas but with all the new players looking for minutes, the team's taking longer to settle than we would have hoped.

We need a new left back in January but apart from that I think it's just a matter of building up the chemistry.

If we had some genuine width in the side we could get away with playing a narrow 3 behind the striker sometimes. Holtby, Lamela and Eriksen. Without it though, whatever formation we play leaves us largely congested and stuck in the middle. Almost at the stage where I'm thinking "fuck it" - play convential wingers and tell the FBs to stay back.

The one thing that must - M.U.S.T. - be brought back is the pressing game. Where the fuck has that gone again? Jesus! Suffocate the oppo and rush them. Even if we had other issues that would help matters hugely. Are the players just ignoring AVB or what because I've no idea why it would be stopped otherwise when it was working brilliantly and making us boss games.

But anyways, as I already said - another win, another clean sheet.

I have been saying for a few weeks now that we need to change the system and play 4-4-1-1,get wingers wide getting the ball into the box for Soldado who thrives on that type of supply and get some space in the middle for Eriksen to spray passes in behind defenders.
Then we don't need our full backs to push up so much and one of our midfielders doesn't have to drop so far back.
In this system as you rightly pointed out,all the play gets congested in the middle, everyone gets on top of everyone else and there is no movement because all our players end up facing towards our goal. This is crazy!

An accurate and I will predict unpopular assessment
Doubt it will be unpopular. Surely no one can disagree with the notion that we've paid £30m for a player that has a lot of developing still to do, which by definition means we've overpaid.

i think the way people assess games and disseminate information is interesting on this site. today was not a good defensive performance against bargain bucket opposition and we lack any fluidity in attack. bereft of ideas and not a good enough possession to chances created ratio.

however our results which are admittedly good paper over these obvious flaws.

Same will be being said about Bale at Madrid. We all know what Bale is capable of. Just a little patience is required. Players, even bona-fide established worldies/international talismen used to get a honeymoon season after moving to a new league. Why that stopped I don't know but it's far too soon to start worrying about Lamela.

Nowadays the high prices tags arent for finished articles, they are for the potential and is the risk with every transfer no matter how big or small the price tag.. Lamela will improve

In terms of the general match play, anyone judging us on tonight should bear in mind that this is the Europa League. It doesn't matter how seriously AVB takes it, the players don't. That much is obvious.

The fact is last season our Europa League sides would scrape draws away and wins at home and just about manage to get through. This year we've already qualified (barring any ridiculous results in our final 3 fixtures) and we've won twice away.

We've not been great and were poor at times defensively tonight, but that was with very dodgy full backs and a team playing little over 50%.

Hmm and here's another specimen of one of those weird sensible folk I've heard so much about. However I'd prefer it if you just left us in peace so we could continue enjoying making rash conclusions after four games and telling you "I told you so" after the fifth.

We're not here to enjoy the team we're only here to enjoy our opinion.

Not really, we know how good Bale is and what he is capable of. Lamelas potential is largely unknown.
