I want to thank Tim Sherwood - for helping me deal with my addiction to Spurs. I'm not even that upset when we lose nowadays.
Let me explain why.
Under AVB in the summer, Spurs were seen as a real threat - enough of a threat that Chelsea went out of their way to gazump us for Willian! Stars across Europe were prepared to come to Spurs even as we sold Bale.
At the beginning of the season AVB, finally having a squad that he had built, starting sorting out they way he wanted us to play. First he sorted out the defence, building the second strongest defensive record in the league. Yes it was boring to watch but then again, Brendan Rodgers's Liverpool weren't great last season but now have matured into a really exciting team.
Unfortunately we then came up against ManCity at the Etihad who put 6 past us. Losing 6-0 at the Etihad now isn't as bad as it was then as now they are pulverising everyone, but then it was a massive blow. AVB, under pressure from the board crumbled and tried to keep his system while play more attacking, which didn't work - and everything fell apart as we know.
Sherwood is clearly desperate to prove himself the Spurs manager. However with just an 18 month contract he knows he's under pressure. So, knowing the way Levy works, he's decided that the way to win over Levy is
1: Play attacking football - so the fans will be happy.
2: bring through youth players and raise money by selling foreign imports - thus saving Levy a fortune.
So Sherwood has practically ignored Capoue - a French International and who has shown in the few games he's played that he's a top class DM.
He's loaning out Holtby - a German international.
He's ignoring Lamela - though he can't sell him as Levy bought him as Bale's replacement so will have to use him eventually.
He's playing Bentaleb - a very decent young player but also a clone of Dembele and so shouldn't be playing together.
He's recalling Livermore - just as Sandro and Paulinho are returning and even though he's playing 4-4-2.
Not a single top class player will be at all interested in joining Spurs under Sherwood - even if we do get into the top 4. And why should they? An unproven manager who is unknown outside the UK. A manager who doesn't like foreign imports. A manager who ignores top class talent like Capoue and Lamela?
Sherwood in charge might please the fans short-term. But it has ripped up any long term plan and ensured that, by selling the top class talent we have and not being able to attract the top class we'll need, we'll drift further and further back, behind Liverpool, behind ManU and into the 6th-at-best stage that we left behind 5 years ago.
Thank you Timmy.
