No. The tradition is about respecting and welcoming your opponents and should be maintained in the spirit of sportsmanship.

Players who refuse to shake hands, for whatever reason, are a disgrace and should be penalised.

That kind of attitude is a shameful blot not only on their own reputations but also on the beautiful game.

Personally I think you need to look at why someone won't shake hands. Why should Wayne Bridge shake hands with someone who clearly had no respect for him? Why should Anton Ferdinand shake JT's hand after that incident?

What seems to make it a big deal is the media doing the whole will they/won't they thing. If a player just came out at the start of the week and said "I'm not going to shake his hand then everyone could just get on with it."

No, there has been what 3 incidents in the 100's (1000s?) of matches since it begun. That's not much of a problem is it

I agree. Mostly there are no problems because their is respect among players - it's only the odd non-sporting issue that causes problems.

A kid down my road apparently didn't say thanks for the bike he got for Christmas and acted like a little prick. Now, thanks to him the entire road isn't celebrating Christmas next year.

Yeah, let's tear down the spirit of sportsmanship due to one horrible, cheating knobhead and 'put the incident to bed' by forever remembering it as the incident that killed pre-match handshakes.

So, for me, no.

Of course we shouldn't get rid of them. It should be a sign of respect between players and they should all be capable of that. If people really don't want to shake hands then that's their decision but really everyone should just be a grown up about it.

Really don't think we should be altering the pre-match routine just because of the petulant and stupid actions of that little rat Suarez.

it was a pity about the Nazi salutes by the England team back in 1938 though, let's not bring those back...

Keep the handshakes, it can help to neutralise the antagonism between overpaid, over-privileged players and may even stop them behaving like petulant, stubborn schoolkids.

Shouldn't be scrapped in my opinion.

Sport is such a huge focus and therefore has a responsibility to the viewers. Football isn't simply a spectacle for supporters and way to earn a living for the players.

Sport is a valuable asset to society and needs to promote good practices. Sportsmanship and fair play should be crucial parts of what they are promoting.

I remember watching Iran v USA at the world cup as a young lad. The build up focused on the rivalries/hatred between the countries. Before the game watching them respectfully listen to each others national anthem and shake hands before the game was such a powerful image to my young mind. Seeing rivals show each other respect before having a heated game was a great spectacle.

I feel for kids today having to watch the nonsense going on nowadays. I feel for them not getting to watch honest players, I feel for them seeing authority so blatantly disrespected when the ref hasn't done anything wrong and I feel for them seeing a player from their own team racially abuse another human being and being told to support the racist because 'he's one of ours.'

A simple handshake to push aside all differences before a game starts is not a lot to ask.

I need to now more about this. How old was the kid and why didn't he travel to the North Pole to thank Santa personally?

I remember the USA Iran match - or at least the build up to the handshake. Amazing how something like that can stay in the memory for so long. I agree with you about the kids having to watch players diving, and cheating, and insulting refs. It really needs to be sorted out. If the FA came out and told players that they would be red carded for swearing at the refs and the refs actually followed through with it the problem would be gone in two weeks.

As for the pre-match ritual may-be the fact that players won't shake hands with the racists and the wife-shaggers could also act as a lesson as to what is and isn't acceptable

I think they should be replaced with a high five and a "was'up my nigga?" would be well down with the kids.

The racist, wife-shaggers etc get vilified enough in the press and will get abuse from the fans during the games. For that one moment before the game shaking hands isn't too hard to do.

I protest,.... no goat option in poll

bigger problem is that both teams walk out the same tunnel next to each other - amazing there isn't more trouble than there's been historically with "bust ups" and the like

How many times have there been incidents during the pre-game handshakes compared to the total amount of games where that ritual has been performed?

Could it be that the problem lies with the character of the players involved in each incident?

Of course it's not needed. It's not needed to shake the ref's hand after the game but it's good sportsmanship and sets a good example. 99.9% of handshakes have gone without a hitch so why should the whole thing be scrapped just because Suarez is a petulant little arsehole who can't accept that what he did was wrong?

It would be like banning fans from the first 5 rows because one player once kung-fu kicked a Palace fan.

It's a ridiculous suggestion and would basically be approving what Suarez did.

Uli Hoeness after Bayern defeat tonight

"Stop this shit handshake. We are not in a Girls School, always this shit handshake "

From @SPORTBILD - Hoeness is spot on, hopefully more football people will start talking about how stupid and pointless it is

With such well-articulated logic he must be right

Getting rid of the handshake sends out a hideous message of our sport to the general public. Sport is about respect for your opponent - the pre match handshake is a big part of that. Personally I can't think of a single positive to be gained from scrapping the handshake. Any player who refuses to shake the hand of another should be fined by club and FA to stop the image of Premier League football from being tarnished.
