The then president gave them(23 players) special military exemption because of the performances in 2002 World Cup. It was an one-time thing.
It actually wasn't a one time thing. They also awarded it to the bronze medal olympic team and Asia Cup winners. As long as he wins a cup or does well at a major tournament he will get one.

Has anyone seen him play, if so has he got strength? I feel that is often what sets aside the players who look good on YouTube and the ones who actually perform in the premier league.
Strength isn't as important if you have pace and/or agility, that's why players like Mata, Silva, Oscar, Hazard etc. do so well without being that strong.

Lamela lacks pace and agility, which is part of the reason he hasn't done well.

I can see Levy making it a term of the contract. No pay unless he wins a major tournament and avoids national service. ;)

Agree, you can have power or you can have pace/agility and you'll go a long way to being successful in the PL.

If you have both (like Bale, Ronaldo) you're laughing. If you have neither, you're struggling.

Exemption through(?) Asian Games and Olympics is in the law. World Cup wasn't and is not until now.

See, I think he lacks intent and aggression, rather than raw pace and agility. Just doesn't have a killer instinct at present, though let's not forget he had some back issues 18 months ago.

That's wrong - Hazard and Silva both have a low centre of gravity, and are strong in their core. Both know how to use their arses to shield the ball from their markers.

It will be tragic if Lamela can be sold when Son comes.. If Lamela and Townsend are both ineffective up front, one just need to look at beginning of last season when Lamela tracked back so much more often than Townsend to help up in defence..

The flair player some of us craves lies in Lamela and Eriksen.. They suck sometimes is really we lacking sorely a true DM who can do all the dirty job, freeing up some defensive duties off them..

Unless we get someone who is Sandro Mark II, Njie and Son will too be liable to losing balls not significantly lesser than Lamela.. And our complains are gonna be back again..

I applaud Levy to signings like Njie and Son, if true.. But mark my words, Lamela is still useful, even with Son, if a true experienced DM is signed in this window..

If we did get him, please for the love of God, can people refrain from getting 'Sonaldo' on the back of their £55 home shirt. We don't want another 'Goaldado' incident, shaming us for years on end.

So would I be right in saying, we are not in for Son at all?

General consensus is:-

Well placed German media saying deal is advanced (some saying medical today)
Sky saying no medical but interest is real
Grey Fox cryptic ITK 90% likely to be Son
Ben says not happening

I'm pretty certain there's legs to it all things considered.

Well didn't BEN say we're interested but Leverkusen wont sell? Although there's reportedly a release clause so that shouldn't matter too much anyway IF correct

Ben has changed his stance now...says we're interested but the Club don't want to sell.

Just seen this on a Leverkusen forum, from about 20 minutes ago:

In translated English:

In German (@Lufti ):

It might just be that the translation is bad but doesn't this say that Sky Germany are now also reporting he is having a medical in London...?
