Spurs’ Prison Initiative (and an unexpected meeting with Ossie Ardiles)

Today I met Ossie Ardiles and Ricky Villa in prison.

The prison is HMP The Mount which is a Cat C Training prison near Hemel Hempstead. I’m on the prison Independent Monitoring Board. Every prison has an IMB to act as the eyes and ears of the public inside prisons.

I was walking between the wings when I saw Ossie and Ricky walking towards me. A Governor (an Arsenal fan but a good man) who knows I’m a Spurs fan called me over the meet them.

Spurs have “twinned” with The Mount and are running a training program within the prison. The program covers fitness, football skills but also self discipline. The men love it

Ossie and Ricky were there to present certificates. Ricky said only one thing “I don’t speak English. I came to England to play football not learn the language. But well done”.

It’s good to see the club giving something back to the community.

Prisons have been really horrible places recently and it was really good to see the club bringing a little joy into prisoners’ lives.
