we can't pay monster wages because ENIC won't subsidise the club, rightly or wrongly.

However, experience shows that the top paying clubs dominate the the trophy lists, so we'll continue to miss out in all probability due to our inability to compete financially.

The club has to live within its means. Otherwise we end up like Leeds, or Portsmouth. No thank you.

Let others gamble, if that's what they want to do.

We will. You are always welcome to go and support Chelsea if you don't like it.

or we end up like city and chelsea, i'd take the gamble no danger.

Even if we lived outside our means we wouldn't be able to compete financially with those clubs.

We need to take a different approach to trying to outspend everyone.

It's not your money you'd be gambling though. Given just how much Chelsea and Man City have at their disposal I don't think any amount ENIC would be able to put in could make us competitive with those two and Man United. I think to break into that cabal we'd need someone with an equally ridiculous fortune to come in and throw money at us. Which in turn makes the club his toy and the fans irrelevant, as we're seeing with Abramovich and the manager saga. In all honesty I'm not sure I'd want that.

Doesn't work for the arsenal though does it.

By all accounts Arsenal are living within their means. The regular CL football and new stadium means they have a much bigger income than us and therefore can spend more on wages.

We need to seriously increase our income before we up our wage bill significantly.

That's an oversimplistic view with extreme examples taken.

Whilst i agree living within our means is sensible, investment in the clubs is needed too.

I would be happier if we kept the wages at a sensible level but offered more bonuses and signing on fees to compensate.

When you boil it down, in the last few seasons or so, we've been more or less in and around the scum, pretty much just shy of them in terms of league positions etc, yet we could probably furnish our squad twice over with their wage bill. That's a massive positive for me. What Levy/ENIC are prepared to spend is an irrelevance in that we've no control of it, the fact is in spite of that we are where we are, and that's a plus given the revolving door we've had installed for managers etc.

I think all but the most soft-headed of Spurs fans realise that we don't have the income of the clubs that are generally above us, and that's why we have such a strict wage-cap. The great hope for the future is that a new stadium will significantly increase that revenue and thus put us on a par financially with the likes of Arsenal, United and Liverpool.

Chelsea and City are on another planet financially and we'll never get near that unless we're taken over by a similar sort of tycoon. My personal opinion is that we don't want this to happen as it will dramatically change the feel of the club and not in a good way. Just ask the old school City and Chelsea fans if they are happy, and I suspect a large number of them would say no.

Indeed, the supporters of those clubs were loving it when their board threw money about on bigger and better players, not loving it now though.

I don't think saying we need to spend more money means we have to go as far as to spend in the same way that Leeds or Portsmouth did.

We have some players who simply aren't going to make an impact for us. Jenas, Bentley, Gomes and Cudicini clearly aren't going to get any game time for us.

Getting them off our books will save us around £150k a week in wages.

It's risky spending big money but taking a punt on Leandro or Moutinho right now could make the world of difference.

Yes very clearly it's the Russian's club not the fans. The latter are irrelevant really.

We would if we had rich and committed owners like Chelsea and City have.

I don't think it takes a lot of committment to spend a huge amount of money when it gives you no difficulty whatsoever and puts you at no risk.

Levy spending his own money or the clubs' money to the degree that you are asking would be putting them and us at risk of bankruptcy.
