Tottenham hope European giants make Hotspur Way their London training base

Tottenham hope their training ground will next year become the London base for clubs like Barcelona ahead of key European matches.

Spurs plan to open their ‘player lodge’ – a state-of-the-art 45-room facility close to their Hotspur Way headquarters in Enfield – early in summer 2018.

The club’s plan is that the multi-million-pound facility, which is currently under construction, will be used by top clubs before Champions League and Europa League matches in London.

Instead of staying at a hotel and training elsewhere, the lodge - not to be confused with Spurs Lodge, the club’s previous training ground in Chigwell, Essex, which they left in 2012 - would allow these clubs to train and sleep on the premises.

Planning permission was granted in January 2015 and construction work is well underway, meaning the lodge may be open in time for the start of the 2018-19 season. To support their case, Spurs presented letters from Barcelona and AC Milan to Enfield councillors late in 2014.

These documents indicated that the player lodge would meet the requirements of these clubs, while there is also a strong chance England would stay there the night before matches at Wembley. The national team regularly train at Hotspur Way prior to friendlies and qualifiers.

The lodge will be located at Myddleton Farm, a stone’s throw from Hotspur Way. As well as housing club and international sides, Tottenham players will use it to rest between double training sessions, which are often favoured by current manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Spurs could also stay at the lodge before home games and other fixtures in London, while prospective new signings would use it as their transfers were being concluded – the perfect scenario for those deadline-day deals that are not sealed until late at night.

The player lodge represents another step in Spurs’ attempts to join Europe’s leading clubs. Their training ground, opened in 2012, is regarded as one of the best in the country. They hope to move into their 61,000-seat stadium – a project costing about £800million – for the 2018-19 campaign.

Regarding the new ground, the picture should become clearer towards the end of the month, when Spurs will decide whether to activate their option to stage home fixtures at Wembley next season.

Most likely Levy had this in mind too. A good money spinner when its not being used by us. It'll probably pay for itself in a few years with all the foreign clubs paying us money to use it whenever they are in town.

I wonder will there be an American football facility there as well? I could see that making sense considering...

I really think that Levy & Co are really turning THFC into a Powerhouse in World Football. We need to start producing Silverware but the Infrastructure that is now around our club is nothing short of Spectacular.

One of the best training facilities in the world of football, one of the most sophisticated Stadiums around the world and now this. We really could become the club that all other clubs around the world (not all other supporters I hasten to add) aspire to!!

Yeah you have to hand it to Levy, he's really built something here. Hopefully we can start to push on competitively now.

Got to love the steps the club is making across the board at the moment. If we can get that success on the pitch that we're craving, we could be setting ourselves up for a great period going forward.

What if we are playing Barcelona? Do we let them stay and provide a shit service and 3am fire drills?

Unless I'm just being a picky twat, the word hope bothers me. Do we really 'hope' clubs come and use the facility ? In particular singling out Barca sounds small time as if were this little club and hope Barca come for a sleep over.

Weve got world class facilities, and a soon to be world class complex for clubs to use, I would think THEY would hope to be able to use our facility.

I do agree, but I don't see Levy's Travel Tavern as a major part of that.

Apart from the financial side of another revenue stream helping our turnover I'd also argue if the big European teams rock up to a state of the art facility that puts theirs to shame then the perception of our club will only get better on the worldwide stage. Especially when, eventually, it's in tandem with the new stadium.

Players do discuss things like facilities when they experience something a bit special and if it helps to attract players in the long run it could help on the pitch.

We should hire former players to run the hotel like Faulty Towers with Ozzie as Manuel and Hoddle as Basil etc. There would be a place there for Freund for sure.

It's a great way of tapping up. Why bother sneaking the best players in the world into the club to show them round when their club can do the job and pay for the honour? Master stroke.

I can see Messi and Neymar refusing to return to Spain once they've slept in the comfort of a bed made by Darren Anderton.

I was watching that Dele in a taxi video the other day and he mentions "they're building a hotel over there" when they drove into the training grounds. He said it in such a matter of fact but impressed way that made me grin. Probably tells me more about Dele than anything else but building the facility is cool nonetheless.
