I've no idea what Bilic was up to with his recent comments, but I think he's spot on this time:

Croatia coach Slaven Bilic says Luka Modric made the right choice in deciding to join Tottenham, rather than any other Premier League side.
The 22-year-old midfielder will join Spurs next season after they agreed terms with Dinamo Zagreb.
"Tottenham is a perfect club for Luka. Spurs are a better club for Luka than, for example, Chelsea," said Bilic.
"Chelsea could have bought him, Lionel Messi and Ronaldinho and then Luka could have ended up on the bench."
Modric had been linked to several other Premier League clubs - including Arsenal, Chelsea and Newcastle - but Bilic said Spurs boss Juande Ramos would get the best from the highly rated star.

"At Tottenham it will be different. Ramos will have patience with him so he gets used to the Premier League style of play," said Bilic.
"I'm certain that Luka will become their main power, the star of the team."
Modric, who has scored three goals in 24 appearances for Croatia, said Ramos had been a major factor in his decision.
"It is a big thing that Ramos wanted me in Tottenham so much," Modric said.
"Ramos's desire was my major motivation to play at White Hart Lane."

Brilliant signing, made my day yesterday when I woke up:grin: Can't wait to see him in action for us, now let's hope we follow on from this and bring in two or three more quality players.

I think the only people more distraught about him signing for us - other than the Geordies - are SSN. We've received less coverage in having actually signed him, than they got from just being linked with him. Someone better check in case Jim White is swinging from a rope.

Absolutely spot on.

I cannot believe how little coverage this has got on SSN. The only thing i can think of is that it's not signed and sealed yet so they'll wait for that, but at the same time, you're 100% right when you say Newcastle being linked with him got more coverage.

They're so fucking pro-Geordie on there sometimes it defies belief. I'm sure i'm way off here but i wonder if Levy's treatment of the Evening Standard journos has had some sort of effect on the way certain media deals with Spurs. Even if it had been Everton, Villa or West Ham, as well as any of the top 4, it would've received much more media coverage than it has currently got.

Spurs Bolton report gets 90 seconds coverage then.. 'also today, Spurs have agreed to sign Luka Modric from Dinamo Zagreb for 20m Euros. Now, Stoke were denied promotion today by a late goal.....'

****s.

So does the much maligned Damien Commolli get some credit?

Thought not.

Yup, Commoli does deserve credit.

It's also clear that Ramos has personally watched Modric several times.

Ramos has stated:

"If [the Modric deal] goes through we will be delighted. I've seen him several times in games for his club. The club always try to sign good players, whatever players we sign will improve the squad. We always want to improve the squad and show our ambition."

So, we identified Modric as a top first team target, and Commoli did the deal in competition with a lot of top European clubs. Trebles all round.

Fair point, but the fact Chelsea were playing Man United in the biggest game of the season later that day - and live on Sky - was a factor.

Had we signed him on a normal Tuesday afternoon, there wouldn't have been the circus SSN apparently reserve for the Barcodes, but there would have a great deal more coverage.

Bomber, completely agree. It's fucking ludicrous that we make a 16mil signing of one of europes hottest prospects and it barely registers a ripple. If it was one of the top 4 or Newcastle it would have dominated headlines for 3 days. There would have been a full biography, interview with his dad's newsagent, a clip of every goal scored, quotes from his old headmaster etc. There was barely any mention of it in todays papers either. And this is not the first time that our signings have been treated this way.

I'm surprised too at the lack of coverage in the sunday papers. The Telegraph's football supplement barely went beyond:

'Name - Something Modric, From - Eastern Europe, probably Russia'

yep agree with the Sky bashing - I can't say too often how Sky annoys the **** out of me

in fact the whole thing is so low key I'm getting a little worried it won't actually happen - I'll be massively relieved to see the medical done, the permit granted and the contract signed

TBH there's a shocking amount of ignorance about Modric.

Okay it's the usual suspects, but:

TS Breakfast Show yesterday,
Andy Townsend: "Mike, Spurs have signed Luka Modric, what do you think?"
Porky Parry: "Er....Modric? Modric? Who he?"

TS today:
Kingprawn: "Modric looks a typical Spurs player, he'll fall over in a gust of wind, and by Christmas will be worn out in the hustle and bustle of the PL".

2 first class numpties I'll agree, but typical of the broadcast media of which I include SSN.

I personally am glad Levy has slapped the Standard down and has a frosty relationship with the press. They only build us up to knock us down again asap.

So nobody remembers a certain central midfielder who tore the England midfield apart at Wembley a few months ago?

Ray Houghton thinks he's a good player,

"but will be moving to a CL club in a few years onto the next level".

I hope his Spurs supporting mates in Chigwell beat him up!

Has he signed a contract with us that includes a clause saying we can tear it up if he doesn't pass the medical or fails to get a work visa, or is he going to sign once the medical and visa are in place?????

I bloody hope it is the former.

Well he's an International, so the work permit is a formality and automatic.

As for the Medical, I'm sure if he was not fit for Croatia this Summer we'd have heard the rumours by now.

Don't worry!

I'm glad the club has a lower profile on SSN and certain media outlets... I'd much rather we build up our team quietly and without the hype and pressure that will come with it, lets leave all that crap to Newcastle. I so glad they've taken over from Spurs as being the medias circus ground- Toon Army, King Keegan and all.
