A steward filmed performing comically ineffective frisks of supporters before a Tottenham Hotspur match will not work at the club’s stadium again.

The steward became a viral sensation after mobile phone footage of him at work before Saturday’s Premiership clash with Bournemouth was retweeted more than 20,000 times.

The video shows him barely even touching fans as he searched them on their way into the ground, instead merely waving his hands near them disinterestedly.

It has been universally slammed by supporters following a week in which the Borussia Dortmund team bus was targeted by three explosions.

Tottenham Hotspur did not comment on the case but confirmed that the steward – who was employed by a contractor – would not work at White Hart Lane again.

The video was first brought to their attention by a Twitter user called Callum Wright, who wrote sarcastically: “Credit to @SpursOfficial. Raising the bar in security after a terrible week.”

The club was quick to respond, stating: “Thank you for bringing this to our attention. The contractor has apologised and we've taken action accordingly.”

The footage appears to have been originally taken by Colin Rowland, who joked: “Massive security operation at Tottenham today on an unprecedented scale.” He has received hundreds of comments as well as 12,000 ‘likes’.

It comes as Premier League clubs up their security measures following a letter sent out by the league’s governing body.

A Premier League spokesman said: "Premier League clubs take safety and security very seriously and have a range of policies and provisions in place. They routinely work closely with the police, and with their local safety advisory group.

"Following the tragic events in Berlin, the Premier League shared with clubs relevant up-to-date information and guidance provided by statutory authorities."

What a **** the guy who posted this is, why put it all over social media? Why not just show the video to the club? All this just to get a few retweets on twitter! Absolute tool! Imagine someone filming him doing his job poorly and posting it online! Not agreeing with the steward cos it's not acceptable, but what a nobber! Hope the guy gets some of the same treatment

On the other hand it does send out the message to other stewards that they had better do a good job or they won't be doing it again. It for the fans safety after all.

That;s the point its not for safety its to stop anyone bringing alcohol into the ground - if people really think a bunch of guys earning the minimum wage are going to be able to spot anything vaguely dangerous then they are sadly mistaken

Well maybe the super rich premier league clubs ought to be doing more thorough checks? Especially in a week where football has been targeted.

Frankly it's a surprise the likes of Isis et al haven't targeted stadiums already. It would be easy pickings by the looks of things.

They have. The only reason it didn't result in thousands of deaths was because the stewards did their jobs properly.

Pat downs happen at all grounds, yet how many flares are we seeing recently? It's a pointless exercise generally, if someone is determined to get a gun in then they will tuck it in their sock or something, but i suppose this is a deterrent against fans trying to get in wearing a wing-suit.

I imagine the new stadium's turnstyles will have airport style metal detectors & x-ray machines for bags, so the security firm will be bunging out as many staff as they can to earn what they're able before it becomes automated.

It's a pointless exercise. They can ramp up the checks, use x-ray machines, whatever. But I guarantee Sissoko still finds his way on to the pitch on a regular basis.

Maybe the team coach should drop him off 50yards outside the stadium and put a ball at his feet. He'd never locate the stadium then!

no its public shaming, if they would have taken the correct measures, surely spurs as a company would have released some sort of memo to stewards/matchday staff etc, its just wrong what the guy did. all to get a few followers, he couldnt care less i doubt.

If I remember correctly all match day officials are supposed to be briefed. I would say that he was briefed but wasn't doing what he was told and there was no adequate supervision or he would have been told to search people properly.

The issue then becomes how do you correct the situation when there is no proper supervision? There is guarantee that the company employing the stewards would have paid any attention to a letter going in so posting on the internet was the next best thing. Not necessarily the best way of doing things, but certainly effective!
