I take it is forward McQueen who scored, not fullback McQueen?

Nathan Oduwa scored three games in a row now,
think he'll be key player for the U18 and U19 (Nextgen or Champions League) teams next season.
What happened with him earlier this season, was with WBA I believe, what was the deal there?

Darren McQueen scored after coming on as a sub - usually a forward but OS for some reason claims a LB. Cousin Alex McQueen who is probably mainly a midfilder often plays RB these days also started the match.

Hope you asde not more coinfused over their position now as OS was before !

Yup Nathan Oduwa is looking a player - but he's a big lad so hope he keeps it up (sometimes the bigger ones are deceptive at this age as they outmuscle the others - but in this case Oduwa seems to have great technique and dribbling skills). He will efinitely be in NextGen next year, although a year or so under the usual age.

Nobody knows about why he went to WBA - one plausible reason might be that his parents moved there and as a 16 year old it wasd thought he should fiollow. Glad he's back though.

If we are in nextgen next year, UEFA kick off their own U19 Champions League as well
Think Nextgen will be considered second rated from now,
probably offered to the biggest clubs that aren't in the Champions League.
Could see Everton, Newcastle, Fulham etc. invited as others will prefer the UEFA one.

He's HUGE for his age. Surprisingly, already has a couple youtube videos showing off some good technical skills and a decent burst of pace. He's only started 3 matches for our youth team so far this season and has scored a goal in each match. He'll definitely be one to keep an eye on in the future...

I don't think it matters that he is big for his age. To worry about that is kinda the reverse of just wanting big, strong, athletic young players (not that I am saying anyone on this page is doing that (y)). What is important is that all players be brought up comfortable with the technical elements of the game. This lad looks like he has.

I like that we do have some big players most of the current crop are lightweight midgets, Pritchard, carroll, ceballos, Mason and so on while I don't mean to dismiss small players it's nice to have a balance and lets face it the prem will always be more physical than most leagues so you'll always need some height and power

I t does matter when a player like that is big for his age though. Because you are bigger, stronger faster than the guys you are playing against, you're confidence lifts, you feel like you can do anything, start bringing out tricks and flicks, and you're scoring all the time. Then you get into the adult age groups and suddenly everyone's your size and speed, and does tht confidence stay? Do they still have it in them to believe in their talent? A lot don't

I agree.
I still remember the Everton Munchkin Bunch, who woulda been real Playas if teams hadn't just learned to play head-tennis around them.

I'm sorry, Daniel, but you have completely and utterly got lost. No-one as discussing any of these elements and no-one mentioned them in any way, whether positive, neutral or negative, and that includes myself.

I was answering a specific post regarding this specific player's technical skills, and I was answering it specifically within the context of the change of focus within our youth set-up - which has gone from emphasising big, strong atheltic lads and competitive matches, to emphasising young lads with technical ability no matter what size they are, and development over winning at an early age.
Within this specific context, I was saying that what is important is not whether Nathan Oduwa is a big lad for his age or not, but that he has been brought through a system emphasising technical ability and not one telling him to get stuck-in and win because he's a big unit, whether he has any skill or not - indeed, totally ignoring technical ability because it isn't important as he is a big unit.
I hope this clarifies it for you (y)

Don't get your knickers in twist, my reply was clearly to your point "I don't think it matters that he is big for his age" All I said is that size and physique can skew everything in youth football, so making judgements is a real skill.

Ray Lo's usual excellent detailed report on Spurs u 18 3-0 defeat of West Ham
http://www.spursodyssey.com/1213/u18wh020313.html

At this time of the season Spurs usually startr to play a team which is mostly Academy Year 1 plus some u16's with a few Academy Year 2 such that next season there is a core squad available with experience of playing u 18 matches as this year's Academy year 2 will generally be too old - and focussed on competing in u 19 NextGen Series. And this year is no exception - the side playing West Ham was quite young. So its good news to see them beating West Ham quite easily - still quite a lot of coaching work to be done to improve the side from the sounds of it, but giood news that they are evidentally getting there !

This will make it about 5 years worth of good Academy products coming thriough after the turning point which is generally considered to be the year in which Stephen Caulker, Adam Smiith, Andros Townsend, Dean Parrett and others came through.

With luck that means we might get about 10 players ( 2 a year for 5 years) into the first team squad - which will substantially reduice the number of squad players which we have historically needed to buy - and maybe we'll also find some genuine stars come through as well.

The future is bright !

If anyone is interested, Southampton are playing Liverpool tonight at St Mary's and it's live on LFC TV (Sky channel 429).

Southampton 1-0 up at the moment, which is great news for us. Liverpool with a strong team once again (Suso, Shelvey, Sterling and Wisdom all playing).
