He did nothing!!!

Then what happened? There are so many rumours flying around about his attitude we don't even know what to believe.

Was he just deemed surplus to requirements at Swindon and Spurs?

Yes your right, I should not have said that, I wish him well it's a shame it didn't work out I do hope he goes on to make it.

It hard with so few spots and so many players coming through nationwide youth systems. I am sure he will make it as a pro football player.

Fair enough. Let's hope he's mentally strong enough to let his natural ability shine through in the lower leagues and move up the leagues as his game develops.

Will you be sticking around on SC or follow him?

Anyone else catch Luongo's piece of skill late in the Brentford/Swindon play off ? deep left side in his own end of the pitch, he wins the ball, then flicks it over the oppo's head and retrieves it the other side of him.

He's quite a busy little fucker, wasn't having a blinding game till then (but doing ok, keeping it simple), but then the whole standard was poor, the game was just lots of headless hoo ha.

Byrne was played out of position on the left but looked a decent full back in the making maybe (though at RB).

Thanks kali.

It must be horrible seeing rumours like that. And they are clearly groundless. None of us have actually heard anything negative, just speculating based on Dean getting released. Given that hundreds of players get released from clubs every year - many, many of whom go on to have good careers elsewhere - it's all a bit unnecessary. However, the clarification is appreciated.

All the best to Dean. Sounds like he did really well in our excellent U21s this season, which I'm sure means he'll get a chance somewhere good soon. Fingers crossed for him. (y)

Watching Swindon yesterday, I'm amazed Parrett was deemed surplus. Whenever I've seen him he was better than anything they had in the CM area yesterday.

If they kept playing him wide it's no surprise he got pissed off.

Does anyone know the rough annual cost to keep our youth set up in place?

The minimum spend required for Category 1 Academy is £2.5m pa. I suspect, with the number of coaches which is well above the minimum and we also have a lot of youth players (> 100 across all age groups) its probably £3m - £3.5m.

So that's the academy (ie basically up to age 18). With roughly 30 players in the development squad - wages probably £50k to £150k (for the most experienced eg Townsend) its probably another £3m

So total say £6m pa.

.....and that should give us most of the squad players in most positions (although we may be short of strikers until Coulthirst/Coulibally come of age) we need for the foreeable future plus hopefully the ocassional player who becomes a star.

Edit :
1 These numbers exclude any revenue we get from selling players or getting a development fee from their next club. Amounts will vary, but I think we got £500k/£1m for David Button and Jamie O'Hara (came through the academy and departed after playing maybe 50 games as he was not quite good enough to be in the first 11) was sold for £5m. So I guess we'll get in a c ouple of million a year to reduce those costs a tad - and in a good year the net spend could be zero .

2. As a big club it would be a pr disaster not to have an academy even if it did not make financial sense - so the minimum we would need to spend is probably £4m - but by spending more - estimated £6m (ie an extra £2m) , we are seeing a few decent players come out of it plus getting much more kudos. Looking at it that way the return on the extra £2m is pretty impressive !

Bill_Oddie has said most of what I wanted to say. But I wanted to add that football is very much a game of opinions - and that means people (including coaches) get things wrong.

If you look at Spurs :

  • earlier this seasoin we faced Mark Bunn in the Norwich goal (released as a teenager by Spurs, came to Norwich via Northampton and other clubs),
  • Mark Gower was deemed not quite good enough by Spurs and joined Barnet, but got back to the Premiership with Swansea.
  • Michael Kightly had to drop into the Conference with Grays on his release by Spurs - but has played for Wolves in the PL and currently Stoke.
  • Garry Hooper was released by Spurs and is now a much covetted striker at Celtic
...and there are many more who have played in the top flight after being released by PL clubs plus even more playing in the Championsip (maybe less sexy but still a good carear.

So there is defniitely a life and good carear possible after Spurs - even though many of us might be a bit blinkered in that respect !

Best of luck to Dean - he's proved he's s a talented footballer, so plenty of clubs will be interested.

yep, i thought the standard of play yesterday was truly awful. everytime i have watched a league 1 game this season ive felt the same.

i thought luongo did ok, nothing more nothing less although ive never really been impressed with him

Yeah - Luongo is talented, and tough. Deadwood sometimes made him captain of the Next Gens last season, and in the couple of games I saw he was pressing, putting his foot in and talking his teammates through the game. As well as keeping possession and making simple, quick, passes.

I hope we keep him and get him training with the first team in pre-season so AVB gets a good look at his potential. I think Luongo has a football brain, and will play better with higher quality players.

This was exactly the type of thing that was evident and got most of us interested in our development group:

Working with a 4/3/3 system

Friday morning session (preparation for Saturday match)
2 coaches (John McDermott and Alex Inglethorpe) worked 2 diferent practices simultaneously with 8 players (practice A) and 12 players (practice B). Then swapped over after 25 minutes

1) “10 Minute Rule”2) SAQ (fast footwork drills) 10/ 15mins
Focus: Planting foot, accelerate/ decelerate, cut inside man and spin across man 3)

Skill practice A PRESSING/ QUICK PLAY/ COUNTER-ATTACKING

And this (Alex Inglethorpe):

  • Relates aspects of the session very well to modern players and
Tottenham players (e.g. What does Modric do in this situation?)
  • Attention to “firing” the pass in and continual references to Xavi
and Iniesta and the “Spanish way”

Everton u 2's1 beat Newcastle u 21's 5-3 on penalties after a 3-3 draw after extra time.

So the semi final draw is Spurs u 21's v Everton u 21.

Time and venue still to be confirmed - earliest day is Saturday (nb the other semi final of ManU/Liverpool is being played next Tuesday)
