If you don't play your best players, what do you expect? Like a surgeon being given all the tools and choosing to operate with a spoon

Well yeah, shouldn’t leave Eriksen out but that’s the situation.

Even then, losing at home to fucking Newcastle. Should be able to leave plenty out and get some form of result.

As I say, our own doing. We’ve gone from being just infront of Liverpool to being 30 points a season behind them within 18 months

Yep. When was the last time Poch picked a team and we all thought, yeah that’s good, we’ll win today. I honestly can’t remember.

He did say we didnt respect newcastle so he has to take the blame as well as his team selection didnt respect newcastle.

Yeah, exactly. Part of me hopes we put that team out there because of what we have available due to injuries (Dele, Ndombele) and players still getting up to match fitness (Lo Celso). But, there's absolutely no excuse for not starting Eriksen but naming him on the bench. Lamela, Son, Moura and Kane are all "much of a muchness" in attack. They are direct players who, apart from rare occasions, offer very little incisiveness/creativity in the buildup.

Honestly, I mentioned it elsewhere, but this was a perfect match for Eric Dier in midfield with Vertonghen and Toby at CB. Those runs forward by Vertonghen to overload the middle/left in attack with Son/Rose with Dier covering the space left behind by Vertonghen could have been what we needed. Have Dier sit in the middle of pitch, utilize an Eriksen or Lo Celso next to him and I feel it would have been enough.

Dier obviously has his shortcomings, but he's plenty capable of playing what Winks is failing to do right now (sitting deep, distributing and trying to break up counter attacks with solid positioning).

Long story short, it's horses for courses. Pochettino is sticking with the same players, despite the opposition, and it's why sometimes it's coming off, other times it's not. We do have squad depth now, and he's got to learn how to maximize it.
Totally agree - we miss Dier badly - he provides security for the back four - we would not have conceded the goal today or against Villa with Dier holding in midfield and that would have prevented both those teams sitting so deep and showing so little ambition

One shot on target
Next week will be a completely different game, we only suffer like this when teams play this way against us and there's no way Arsenal are turning up like that.

If we start the first 20 minutes like today they will murder us really not looking forward to next week,we need to start Verts and Erickson

When Lascalles bundled Kane over......

Mike Dean: "That's probably a penalty and I'd normally give it but I'm going to get a lot of shit if I do, so I'll let the the VAR decide"

VAR: "That's probably a penalty and I should give it but I'll have to overturn Dean if I do and I'll get a load of shit. I can always argue it wasn't a 'clear and obvious error' and nobody's going to remember I was the VAR anyway. I'll let his decision stand."

It's how slow the defence transitions the ball to the midfield then how slow the midfield transition the ball to the attack, it allows opposition so much time to get organised and back behind the ball, the attackers aren't blameless for whatever reason they all end up taking up each others space or doing an extra unnecessary ball roll or step-over.

The occasions we had today when Newcastle committed forward and there was a break there (a half break if you like) but It was like 2-3+ touches of the ball but not traveling forwards Winks for example several occasions where there was a first time pass on or even take a touch and then pass it forwards but it ended up 3 touches and sideways. Or it fell to Sissoko and he doesn't have that pass in his locker.

The times Winks Sissoko midfield poses any threat with the sideways pass is when they pass it but continue the run forwards or they drive at players with the ball but they rarely do that.

The slow tempo kills us.

Full backs with either zero consistency or total lack of deliveries.

I'm not convinced squeezing Lamela, Lucas, Sonny and Kane onto the pitch all at same time is right either.
I'm not convinced on Toby plus Sanchez either.

Our players rarely seem to communicate especially the back 4.

We take forever with throw-ins, again allows opponents to get set.

We know how most teams are going to setup against us so none of it should be a surprise.

Frustrating. (also Mike Dean is still a ****)

If our manager fails to change his mindset, then I am not very optimistic about CL football next season.

Outside of City and Liverpool there is not much quality. And for the reason alone and the fact I am still certain we have by far the best squad outside of those, i think we will get over the line.

We should however get over the line at a canter but it will be hard work.

We couldn't do it in Madrid, and we couldn't do it today. The way to beat us is to put nine men on the edge of your box and to run like fuck on the break. (It helps if Sanchez doesn't bother to check where the striker is.) We have to learn how to beat teams who do this, and we have to learn it in a hurry.

City face this all the time. They drag play one way, then quickly switch it. A ball is played inside the full back and the overlapping player hits a first-time low ball across the six yard box for a tap in. We have the players who can do this, but we don't. Why not? City players are coached how to do it and ours, clearly, are not.

His team selection did. It was a counter attack masterpiece. But he ignored the fact we'd be camped in their half with 80% possession.

Looking back at the posts in this thread, a lot of people thought it was the right team. A lot of people in the Starting XI v Newcastle thread went with that too.

Fullbacks are biggest problem. Rose is almost 30 and starting to look like it. Played great last year but can't do it physically anymore every single time. Davies and KWP are mid-table level guys at best. Not awful as squad guys but not starting level players for top 4. Aurier - who knows?

Liverpool and City are better than us across the board obviously but I think biggest difference between us and them is at the FB spots. With no pace, threat, or playmaking from the FB spots, we are too narrow and everything inside gets squished. Not sure what Poch can do to fix this issue.

Leaving out Eriksen and Vertonghen is never the right thing. Simple

Embarrassing that. Slow , lethargic, no urgency, and no CREATIVITY!

Getting sick of the Eriksen and Jan situation now. If Poch ain't gonna play em', then he shouldn't be picking them in the squad at all. Everyone knew how Newcastle were gonna play today, and with eleven men behind the ball, and Eriksen on the bench watching, that's just insulting. Just watching Winks and Sissoko, go side to side for an hour was laughable.

Totally agree. Poch needs to either use Jan and CE (we all know they are good enough for starting XI) or you freeze them out totally.
This inbetween shit is no good.

Oh my good how Poch fucked up tactics today. If he didnt know Newcastle would play with all 11 in defense he must be out of his mind. And then still telling the boys to play the way they did.
And as always he sure takes his time to do the subs. FFS.

I agree. They've both been in my team in the Starting XI threads. But lets not pretend that plenty of people didn't want to see Eriksen out of the team, or Son and Lucas either side of a No.10 even though it's rarely worked in the past.
