whats wrong with the u23 and academy sides these days? they are terrible
I know someone who genuinely knows his stuff about youth football - every time a player has been over hyped, he’s called it right.

He says we’ve years of bad management and scouting at this level

ps he’s quite negative about some of the supposed youth ‘stars’ we have, but has a high opinion of Scarlett

I've said before that this doesn't look right. There are three options as I see it, (a) the quality of our youth is way, way below that of our peers, (b) this is all part of some bizarre development strategy, or (c) our youth coaches are completely f**king inept and are hanging our young players out to dry.

Pick one. I can tell you that I'm going for C.

I saw the u21s pre season and its the worst U21 /reserve side I have ever seen at Spurs and sadly that goes back a few years - of the side I saw none of them were anywhere near first team football - U21 football is frankly a joke and not fit for purpose the boys playing are in some sort of football neverland the results are irrelevant where are these boys going hoping for a loan and that 's about it and maybe a League cup game where is the motivation

It has got to be effecting morale. This has been going on for a good while now. This predates Burnett. I remember everyone constantly doing their nut under Ehiogu because we were so poor. In fact the last time that we were consistently strong at U23/U21 & U18 level was back in the Alex Inglethorpe and Clive Allen days.

In fairness that was a scratch line-up. Paskotsi, Sayers, Bowden and more lately Ashcroft are long term injuries; Cessay and Donley were suspended; and we were also without Devine and Mathurin, for whatever reason.

All of which makes the team selection even more puzzling. Four academy students in the starting lineup, while the likes of Lyons-Foster, John and Mundle warm the bench.

It was an odd decision and the outcome predictable. No idea what the thinking was, but it doesn’t seem fair on the players.

One thing is clear. There’s a worrying lack of strength in depth at this level, and we don’t even have the excuse of having lots of players out on loan.

he is spot on, our youth development has been shambolic after the days under Sherwood/Inglethorpe/McDermott
I would say the money put into the "best academy utilities" is totally wasted due to poor scouting, poor development strategies, inability to compete with Chelski/Citeh in terms of wages, we would have probably won something if the money is invested into the transfer market

Nearly every youth player who looks half decent is over hyped. Many of us on here are probably guilty of it. When I saw Parrot playing in the undrr 19 uefa youth league as a 17 yr old , I thought he was a cert to be in the first team squad in 2 or 3 yrs. he has done ok but nowhere near what I thought he might be. You never know but he just seems half a yard off it. Nearly there but not quite.
Nya Kirby hasn’t got a club after Palace released him.
At the risk of going overboard about him, Scarlett has impressed on loan. Lot of noise about Devine , obviously needs a loan.
Scarlett should start for Portsmouth on Mon night , away to Charlton, live on sky sports.
Parrot out inj till Xmas .
Ferguson said the only young player he saw at 14 who was guaranteed was Ryan Giggs.
Ben Woodburn was the next big thing at Liverpool. Now at PNE with Parrot.
