you can't expect a team to guarantee minutes to a loanee but when one of the first things the manager says(with regards to nile at charlton) is "it'll be tough for him as we have too many players" then that's clearly a poorly planned out move by all parties. now he's missed 4-5 months of playing time, his confidence has probably been knocked and fans have surmised that he just didn't cut it. this is why we need someone in the "sherwood role" to help prevent these kind of situations from occurring.

Don’t disagree with any of this but there’s something to be said about dealing with adversity and proving yourself etc here. Not playing is never good but if he comes back low on confidence and can’t back to previous standards then he’s got no chance at cutting it at Spurs. It doesn’t always work out but the ones who make it can bounce back, use it as a lesson and kick on.

I should add I know nothing about Nile John and his confidence/attitude.

Ideally you wouldn't put a player in that situation. But as mentioned before, it's definitely and experience to learn from. That can help development for sure.

Troy Parrott completed 60 minutes for Preston in their 4-1 away win to Huddersfield and grabbed his first goal for the club.

Dane Scarlett started and completed 62 minutes as league one Portsmouth beat Cardiff City 3-0 away.

It absolutely is a nonsense and I’d be totally shocked if you found a young player with any kind of guarantee’s in their deal anywhere in the country other than what they get paid. Each player will have an ideal development plan but there won’t be any guarantee’s there, if they don’t perform better than the player they are competing with for a place in the team they won’t play
I don't think Nile Johns situation was as simple as a guaranteed start. Didn't Charlton sign four loans and are only allowed three. Or was that another player?

I didn't see #Blake Griffin post above which supports my memory of the issues he faced.

Putting systems in place so we can recall players that are having a bad experience on loan is something we should maybe look at, but we can’t and shouldn’t expect any club to guarantee minutes for our loanee’s. The reality is making it in the professional game is insanely tough, if everything goes your way you’re either exceptional or you’re damn lucky! Even our best young prospect in the academy Alfie Devine got released by Liverpool as a youngster. I’m not gonna lie, if John can’t handle 6 months of things not going his way then he’s not cut out for football. I’m sure the club will support him and hopefully he’ll learn from it and it will be a reality check for him that he’s not going to waltz into high level professional football without a fight

It’s not about “guaranteed playing time” at all, it’s about guaranteeing a better environment for the player’s development than he would get at the parent club. Usually that would require demonstrating a knowledge of the player and his current level, how they plan to integrate him into their team and tactics, and assurances that on at least some level the player will be in serious consideration for first team minutes. Otherwise, what is the point of the loan? If the player stays they will have better facilities, better coaches, better fitness training, and at least U21 matches. We don’t just loan players out at random and see what happens.

Anyway, in John’s case, I believe it has been implied that Charlton weren’t exactly truthful in what they told the club their plans were vs what actually happened.

Paskotsi biggest youth enigma in a long while must have 20 full international caps and isn’t a regular starter for U21, along with just randomly disappearing for periods.

elsewhere 2 players in a current England U16 squad-

Callum olusesi CM
Mikey Moore AM

I saw Paskotsi play for the u21's the other week at Billericay he was very poor - playing as a right back he got a bit of a roasting by a non league winger it may not be his position but I wasn't surprised that he never started the season in the side on that showing

Anybody watching the doc on youth football on channel 4. Football Dreams. The Academy.
2nd episode on Ch 4 tonight at 9pm. Quite interesting...shows how difficult it is to just get into the academy system, never mind become a professional footballer.
Deals with lower division clubs mainly.

Just halfway through one shot a sky series. You get some insight in to the cut throat world of non league and then players trying to find pro deals. Enjoying it so far.

Sorry, i’ve Got mixed up with these. The one I am on about is on sky documentary . The one on channel 4 is following boys at Palace academy, first episode tonight.
Just watching it now. Bit offputting when a lot of them are just talking about money.
Parents are looking at it as a meal ticket.
You can see why a lot of these lads just give up on football if they get released and the best they can do is a 12 month contract in non league. They are so focused on the money and the premier league.

I will have a look at the other one but I agree entirely about the Palace one and I do wonder if the kids are being portrayed a little unfairly

I've 2 family friends who have boys at West ham, both just been promoted to the under 23s. The parents, albeit close friends, mention money I'd say every 10 seconds. Shame really, it seems they are just waiting for it and somewhat expect a 100k per week contract to just materialise.

My driving instructor 10 years back or so in South London was a Nigerian chap and part of a community who had lads playing for Pl-L2 clubs in their youth teams. The stories he told about money were pretty nuts, particularly with the way Chelsea poach kids. They basically tell the parents, sign for us, we'll buy you a house and put your kid through school. They speculatively through £1m+ at children but then cut them out/loan/sell as soon as they arent up to scratch. Im sure Spurs do it to but its so heartless, treating children like cattle.

Also some rumblings on twitter (I know..!) about Alfie Devine and if he will sign a new deal or not (current one expires in two years). Unsurprising that a lot of clubs are sniffing around. I dont really follow the youth scene but have there been any reliable reports as would be a shame to lose him to the continent if he feels his path isnt there with us.
