To be fair, getting Bendtner in on loan to replace Gyan for the year was pretty good business and I thought the signings of Brown and especially O'Shea were excellent for them. Larsson on a free was a good deal too. Westwood on a free is hardly a bad signing either and that Vaughan fella was good for Blackpool last year and isn't a bad squad player for them. Wickham, though expensive, could be anything as could the other two kids in there (McLean and Deacon. I know little about Ji Dong-won, but the one bad deal there is the Gardner one in my view. £6.6m? Way yoo much and could have got someone so much better.

I don't think they'll be able to attract anyone much better. Definitely not worth the upheaval in my mind, but if you are going to do it, do it soon so the new guy has time and a transfer window.

I don't know how Steve Kean is still in a job though.

I was reading that the new contract he has signed pays better but will give him much much less in compensation if ( when ) he is sacked.

That kind of money for Connor Wickham would only make sense if they had time to wait. Even if Gyan had stuck around they would only have been an injury to him away from the exact same position.

He's brought in alot of players and most of them are not very good.

I agree with Davo with regard to his signings. He's been stiffed by his two big striker signings (Bent & Gyan) and it's cost him dearly as it's not easy to replace them. He also brought big money into the club with the sale of Henderson and Bent and hasn't spent all that money yet.

Saying that I'm not a fan of Steve Bruce at all - I'm sure Sunderland could do better.

Your right some of those signings dont look bad on paper, it just seems to me that every summer I look at Sunderland and notice they have signed another 8-10 players. How do you build consistency and allow a team to develop by following that approach?

not his fault that gyan was a twat. had 1 good season and would rather play in uae than for sunderland

In fairness to him, I'd rather live in Baghdad than Sunderland, definitely better to be earning a shitload in the UAE than be there.

You have to wonder, though, why those two (and Jones) decided to bugger off after no time at all. Cana left after less than a season, and if you look down their squad list on Guardian Stats Centre you're pushed to find anyone who's been there longer than a couple of seasons. That says shit manager to me.

What rubbish.

You don't have to be living in Sunderland to play for them and there are some lovely areas in the North East.

Do you think Modric lives on the bloody high road?

Playing in some nobody league should not be commended over playing in the Premier League.

And Cana buggered off to Galatasaray, hardly a step forward. Very odd move.

I agree that it raises serious questions about his management skills. He has signed 30 players for Sunderland.

Errm, so you read that post and actually believed I would prefer to spend my days in Baghdad than Sunderland?

Having said that, when you factor in having to look at Steve Bruce's face everyday, yep, Baghdad wins hands down.

Steve Bruce is heading for a summit with Sunderland owner Ellis Short - armed with a request to be allowed to spend MORE money in the winter transfer window.

Bruce plans to see the American supremo before the end of the week and wants to discuss plans for January - despite fans calling for his head after a poor start to the campaign.

The Black Cats boss, who signed 11 players in the summer, wants to buy a striker, and possibly strengthen in other areas, and is keen to find out what cash Ellis has left for him.

Bruce has never properly filled the gap left by the controversial post-deadline exit of striker Asamoah Gyan and would like to recruit a new forward to put right what he sees as his number one problem.

Sunderland have been tracking Swiss striker Ahmed Mehmedi of FC Zurich, Tottenham's Russian Roman Pavlyuchenko and Wolfsburg's giant Senegalee hitman Papiss Cisse, and Bruce would like a striker of that standard.

However, he will have to get an idea of the budget before going ahead with bids for whatever targetman he can afford - and Short is the man with the answer to that key question.

The US businessman Ellis may have to decide whether to back or sack Bruce before January's market as Sunderland's troubles up front have been one of their main downfalls.

If the Sunderland money-man does not fancy Bruce's abiity to spend yet more of his cash wisely, this could be the toughest meeting of his reign.

Might as well flush the money down the toilet.

Been reading some Sunderland forums.

They want Moyes but think they'll get Hughes or MON (both popular choices aswell). Benitez is mentioned as a wildcard.
