It's probably weirder than the Vertonghen goal that was chalked off...

http://www1.skysports.com/football/...seconds-of-european-qualifier-after-ref-error

Basically, it was 2-1 to Norway and England women had a penalty in the last minute. Leah Williamson scored the penalty, but the referee awarded a free kick to Norway instead because of an England player entering the penalty area too soon.

Anyway, they need to replay the penalty and last few minutes from scratch!

Interesting, and it will set a precedent going forward.
They will apparently also play an additional 3 minutes on top of the 18 seconds that were initially left when the penalty was taken.

Common sense would have been to reward the game as a 2-2 draw and leave it at that.

Love it.

Next time a throw in wrongly goes against us I say we complain and get to start the match from the point where the mistake was made.

Each game would take about 3 years to play.

No... A rule was incorrectly applied and there is sufficient cause for a rematch or decision such as this. There has already been precedent.

Norway might have argued that they could have saved it and still won though... :/

A rule was incorrectly applied when Vertonghen scored....
If we end up losing a league position based on goal difference of 1 (unlikely as it is) surely we would then be withing rights to request something?!

Very dangerous precedent set here.

That said, seeing as they are adding on 3 mins to this game, be funny if Norway keeper saves the penalty and they counter attack and score third.

I don't see the two as the same sort of thing.

A penalty is a nail on goal scoring opportunity that was required to be retaken - it just wasn't (referee error).

I don't know how they could rectify the Vertonghen incident other than to retrospectively award the goal.

And we probably don't want to argue too much with Norway.

Last time we got into a fight with them it all went a bit Viking.

Man u v Spurs last 10 minutes to play 0-1. Where's Mendes playing these days?

I'd love to see it done really retrospectively, and then the teams have to use the players from back then.

If it could ever be proved that the ball didn't cross the line in 1966 for example...what a spectacle that would be!

Jimmy Greaves might get a game this time?

But they didn't save it, England scored and that's why the wrong decision was made.

No, it was an invalid penalty because of the encroachment of the player(s).

The wrong decision was made because he gave Norway a free kick, instead of ordering a re-take.

It'd still be quicker than watching a game in Serie A though

If the attacking team encroached and the penalty was missed then a free-kick to Norway is right. Because England scored the kick should have been retaken.

Yes I know that, but the suggestion by Walkerboy was:

"Common sense would have been to reward the game as a 2-2 draw and leave it at that."

If they just awarded England the goal without re-taking it, then Norway would have argued that they might have saved the re-taken kick and won anyway...

Ah ok I get it.
