And of course is massive breaking news on SSN.

But he's going to be the future of English football.

Southgate's trying to appeal to UEFA to allow him into the U21 squad despite the tourny already being underway. Hodgson's already got his eye on him for sure. He'll be in the England squad come October.

Or will he be yet another one to join the long list of Brendan's poor buys ?

English players are soooo overpriced right now it's a joke! Kane & sterling have huge potential but 40m & 50m...aguero 38m & sanchez 32m!!!

***********************************************************

Says the man who cost £18m in 2000 (aged 21)....

Some transfers around 2000...
Pires; Monaco to Arsenal - £6m
Biscan; Dinamo to Liverpool - £5.5m
Gronkjaer; Ajax to Chelsea - £7.8m
Anelka; Arsenal to Real Madrid - £22.3m (RM club record)

and then cost £30m in 2002 (aged 23)....

Some transfers around 2002....

Ronaldo - £32m Inter to Real Madrid....

Just right now, Rio?

You think Pires and Ronaldo were overpriced?

What the fuck?

You think that Ferdinand was worth 3 times as much as Pires, or as much as Ronaldo (who had scored 204 goals in 252 games at that point in his career)?

My point is exactly that - an hugely overpriced English player (twice over) is criticising rumours of an English player being worth more than a non-English player.

Problem is, Rio Ferdinand may have had some personal tragedy lately (for which he has my sympathy), but he's up there with Sol Campbell in terms of Narcissistic Prick syndrome

AYEW'S GOLDEN HANDSHAKE

Swansea paid Andre Ayew a signing on fee of £5.7million to join the club, according to L'Equipe.

The French paper reports that was the amount the Welsh club used to convince the 25-year-old to join them on a free transfer after his contract ended at Marseille.

Ayew penned a four-year contract earlier this month after the Swans beat a host of other clubs to his signing.

Just seen on Sky Sports. Didn't they do something similar with Gomis?

Swansea remind me of the kind of tricks you have to pull in FM to sign decent players when you've just been promoted!

Supposedly betting suspended on Charlie Austin going to West Ham... Could be a good signing for them but interesting to see if they can get Carroll & Austin in the same line up

To get them in the same lineup it would require Carroll to be healthy for more than 15min, and that seems unlikely.

Laugh out loud funny comment from Rio.

Doesn't matter if he's right(he is), but dude was sold for the absurd price of £30m. Irony at its finest.

Oh right I see what he was getting at now, but what a weird selection of players. The majority of the players brought up there turned out to be overpriced, bar the two I mentioned.

He's been in the game long enough to know how it works. Supply and demand with English players. The few top players cost a fortune, the next tier down still cost a lot, the average ones also (often) cost more than their overseas equivalents.

I'm sure most clubs aspire to a team of British players but the quality and depth isn't there.

There is also a difference between worth and cost that most football writers and commentators don't seem to get. Adding up the usual factors of age, ability, form, contract value etc etc you get a worth - maybe Kane and Sterling are worth about 20-30m at this point - but given their importance to the team and the club's reluctance to let them go, plus their potential to improve, the cost is going to be much much more.

Football players are, and never have been, like a supermarket where one loaf of bread is 1.20 but a bigger one is 1.60 and everything else in between is priced accordingly.

There weren't as many transfers back then (despite the season-long window), so they were the bigger fees around that time.

Anelka was a good player, and Real pretty much sold him for what he cost.

Rio was steep, but worth every penny.
