I don't think it's an accident that Keane, Terry, Gerrard have been captains for their teams. All inspirational in their own ways for their teams; all outfield players; all set and in a pitch position to rally their players when necessary, and talk to the ref at key game moments. Haven't yet seen an inspirational goalkeeper captain in English football. No-one hears them!

I think it is hard for a goalkeeper to be a motivating captain when they cannot move round the pitch. Maybe appoint a vice-captain to give some leadership (Toby, Dier).

There is not one vocal winner in this team who can keep the team from falling apart. When you have the most points dropped from winning positions, and completely throw away a league position in 4 games that was all but locked up, there is a very obvious lack of a winner and a leader in the team.

An article i found from March showed we had actually won the most amount of points from losing positions at that time - 18 - 6 more than our closest rivals.

To say we have "no leaders" and no vocal winners is a tad harsh and is choosing to ignore all but a handful of games that have pissed you off.

That being said I do think we need an older head to calm things down when things get hectic and to be a calming voice out on the pitch.... if anything to bring the winners in our players out.

You dont win 18 points from losing positions (in march) without having some potential winners in the side...... they just need to be shown the way sometimes.

I must admit, I voted for Danny Rose. He has that "never say die" attitude on the pitch, which I feel is infectious. He also has the look of an individual who would rally the troops..and then not be afraid to issue a stern word to any slackers on the pitch..

I know many would mock my choice, but to me he is now made for the job...and he's the right age.

Aren't vertonghen and kane vice captains?
During the season when something went against us either jan or harry were both by the ref. Leave it as it is i say, everybody should be a leader on the pitch

Lamela for me if his English is up to it

When Danny Rose told him at dinner they can make CL he turned to Danny and said stop talking shit, we can win the premiership, Lamela has a winning mentality others are sadly lacking

Plus he gave it his all v Newcastle, amount of players that did you can count on 2 fingers

You need a player who plays every match for starters. I'm not a fan of GK Captains since they're often well away from the play. Lloris should be club Captain but I'd say Toby is the one who has the composure and right skill set. I like the skipper to be in the back 4 as well because they can see what's going on in front of them better than other positions.

I love Lloris but feel the captain should be closer to the action. Toby would be ideal, he is level-headed and knows how to stay out of trouble and I feel he could communicate this self-control to younger players. At the very least he should be our vice-captain.

Why does it matter if the keeper is the captain, other players can be vocal on the field without an armband, just because you're not wearing an armband doesn't mean people won't listen to you.

Hugo had a dreadful season by his standards, lots of unforced errors and bad distribution, so it is probably best if he is left to focus on his own game without worrying about 10 others games, make him club captain still, but have a different player as team captain, Dier is probably the most macho and Lamela has the most passion

Hugo is captain for more than just vocally putting it about on the pitch. He has the respect of the team and manager. Sometimes it is necessary to have a calculated calming influence as a leader and then let the other players on the pitch do the shouting.

He keeps the armband for me and we then can hope that the other key and senior players drive and encourage each other on the pitch vocally and with effort.

For me, it would be Toby.

Presence on the pitch, automatic starter, consistent performer, seems to be a good communicator, looks mean.

However, how do you tell the captain of France that you're taking the captaincy away from him?

We have had different club and team captains before

Pretty sure Ledley King was club captain and Robbie Keane the leader out on the pitch, Hugo would still be a captain so doubt it would affect him

Wasn't that only because Ledley was injured so much?

Hugo all day - but just because he's captain, doesn't mean we can't have players on the pitch showing leadership. It is clear that Toby leads our defence - and it's clear that Dier is the most vocal in midfield. But Toby just arrived and Eric is a kid. Next season, what with the experience they've gained from last, I can't see there being to much to be concerned about. We have leaders on the field - we don't need to pin an arm band on somebody else just to motivate someone to take charge when we're under pressure.

Age doesn't matter for captains

Terry and Adams were both captains at 20, pretty sure Gerrard was too
