Perplexed that anyone would want to see Niko and Luka on the wings. That sort of formation means we have no widths and the center of the pitch would be crowded. Bentley has to be the automatic starter on the right until Lennon is healthly. Bentley at the very least provides width and balance to the squad - leaving space for our creative players in the middle like Hudd, Modric, Defoe, Pav, Gud, etc...

Also I would not play Palacios - we can't risk him getting a yellow and have him miss the Arsenal game who are they're for the taking. I'd go with this formation

Gomes

Walker Daws Bassong Benny

Bentley Hudd Modric Bale

JD Pav

And this is formation - I NEVER want to see - maybe in a pre-season friendly or in scrimmage. Word is Livermore is not even good enough for the championship and i posted my feelings of Niko and Luka on the wing.

Gomes

Corluka---Dawson---Bassong---Bale

---------Hudd-------Livermore
Kranjcar-----------------------Modric
-------------Crouch
-------------------Gudjohnsen

who's playing on the right side? Gudjohnsen?

Stupid formation wont show properly. Basically it's a packed centre. They don't really have wingers, more central players that play on the right or left (Malbranque, Ried, Richardson and so on), and we'd push them back by having Walker and Bale attack like they are good at.

The change in formation has happened in recent weeks anyway but only with the flexible team we have anyway. Gudjohnsen and Kranjcar would support Crouchy and link the play, getting into the hole and forcing Cattermole and Cana to worry, leaving Huddestone and Modric to pick holes and deliver passes. Pav or Defoe to come on when they tire and take more advantage of this.

The key is moving the ball quickly so were sticking the players closer than in the usual 4-4-2. The word is 'out-skill'. And weve got the skills to pay the bills

Forget chances for Walker. He'll have lots more oppertunities and now is the time for experience. I'd put Charlie at LB, assuming he's fit. I'd also bring Kaboul in for Palacios. It's a very tough call but to get so close to the yellow card amnesty and then get booked would be very frustrating, especially considering he'd miss the Arsenal game. I'd also be tempted to start with Gudjohnson because of his ability to hold on to the ball and pick a pass. We might need his coolness.

Gomes
Corluka Dawson Bassong Bale
Bentley Kaboul Huddlestone Modric
Gudjohnson Crouch

Bench: Alnwick Walker Ekotto Palacios Kranjcar Defoe Pavlyuchenko

This is a strong away side with lots of options on the bench.

i'd go with this team as well, although i'd consider maybe resting modric for kranjcar, as we don't lose too much overall and we need modric in top shape for the big games coming up.

the palacios issue is a tough one to call, but so are the strikers. if all are fit, i thik they each have a good case for inclusion. i like gudjonsen for a tough away game though as he can drop into midfield when needed, and he also seems to bring the best out of crouch, as rooney does for england. so i'd like to see this partnership develop a bit more, and havign crouch for an away game is never a bad idea as he is so useful at defending set pieces and providing an out ball for defenders. seems a shame to have your top goal scoprers on the bench though!

wilson must play on sat. IMO.

the argument he will be suspended if booked cant come into it.
we lose sat. and all the scum game will be about is pride and stopping them winning the title imo.

like someone mentioned ..wilson didnt stop us losing at the scum did he?
although i acknowledge his importance.

comparing stoke with sunderland is also a mistake imo.
apart from their kit, there aint much else to compare.

wilson was rested v stoke cos harry realised that stoke are very dangerous at set-pieces and are generally a long ball team...hence chose to play kaboul there.

sunderland play through the middle ,so wilson will be vital ,thats whats on the label, stopping others play.mostly on the ground.

lets not Let the scum game mist our judgment..both games only have 3 points.
and the next game is the most important,

finally, wilson has been playing on the edge of a suspension for a few games now,
and imo, has looked even better for it, he doesnt seem to charge in and looks more controlled,he has been superb....if it aint broke dont fix it.

barca and scum both got players suspended ,no talk of sitting out ..you cant protect players at this important stage of the season ,when EVERY game is so vital.

no room for error now! lets play our best team and worry about the scum after.

COYS!

Agree with this . He's just got to play as if he already has been booked .
He's done that well enough in 9 games like this.

Agree. If he misses this game and then the semi, having missed Stoke and Pompey home, he'll end up missing 4 games to play 1!

Right back is a tough one as Bentley is better suited with a more pacey overlapping right back behind him but think I would still go for Corkula as Sunderland are quite a physical team.

Sunderland also have a couple of hard buggers in the middle in Cana and Cattermole (I'm presuming these two are still first choice?). This would mean Palacios should play in this one.

Gomes

Corkula Dawson Bassong Bale

Bentley Palacios Huddlestone Modric

Defoe Pavyluchenko

Subs: Alnwick, Kaboul, Walker, Krancjar, Assou-Ekotto, Crouch, Gudjohnsen

Agreed, sure thing to have Corluka back in the team, no doubt in my mind really. Only real Q is the strikers, as Gud provides good link-up and can drop into midfield if needed, and Crouch provides us good set-piece defence. Not sure about Defoe's fitness, so have a feeling it could be Crouch and Pav/Gud from the start. Dont have the stats but Crouch most have started most of our away games this season? Would still prefer Pav-Defoe, though..

If Corluka is still feeling his knock its probably worth resting him this weekend and giving Walker another game

I am not saying I agree with the poster making that comment in that way but I have to admit that my eyes rolled when I read your posts, and, there, I think the point of it was this:

Modric and Krankjar are NATURALLY left-sided midfielders - that is their dedicated position within the team. Gareth Bale is NATURALLY a full-back - that is his dedicated position within the team. The Bale/Modric one is possibily the most exciting combo I have ever seen on the left wing (and I have beena Yid for 34 years). There have been several threads on this subject - there is one ongoing now. So why should you find it exasperating that players should be played in their natural positions, in the most exciting left-sided combo since way back when? And 'that sort of formation' doesn't leave us short of width - it means Bale AND Modric, by interraction, are providing the width...did you miss that? Bale as a winger, however, doesn't even utilize HIS attacking strengths to the fullest, let alone the whole host of other issues if raises - try reading the current thread on Bale, you might get a hint of them:shrug:

p.s. Why do you think you aren't good enough for my Mum:evil:

p.p.s. - If Bentley is fit, I would agree with you, I would rather him there than Krankjar.

I'd rather Palacios plays, gets booked, and we win, rather than take the risk of not playing him and we lose.

Can't believe people want to rest Palacious against sunderland. Yes the risk there he may pick up a card. However if we lose at sunderland, then all the games you are saving him for become meaningless.
I hope our players will not underestimate sunderland like so many of you are doing.

Not by a long shot. Especially with the injuries the scum picked up last nite. On our patch we'll almost be full strength by then we could actually do the ****s. Sunderland are a tough team at home but us minus Palacios are still a far better team we just need to play our game and watch out for Bent on the break. We could put out a team that would pass them off the pitch and have Cana and Cattermole chasing shadows all day.

If Palacios plays against sunderland he'll almost definately get booked and the Pompey semi will be alot harder than the league games as that's all they've got to play for and will be well up for it.

If I had to pick Palacios for sunderland or Palacios for pompey and the scum it would be the latter all day long.

I'd pick him for neither. Don't need him til the scum.

It resets on the 11th though the day we play the semi so I believe he'll be all good again

does anyone know if it resets on the 11th or the day after?

and when it does kick in does that mean he's back to needing 5 more before suspension again?

11th is the last day, so it resets on the 12th.

i love wilson
but this is ott..
if we can win 5 in a row without lennon-king-woody-defoe
we can cope without wilson.
we are getting our balls in an uproar .
hes good----but im sure we will cope if hes suspended.
