Bentaleb just tweeted that he's 'en route to Sunderland' - so he might make the squad? Unless he's just travelling or the u21s have a game or something
Must be going to team because no U21 match I could see, but why would he be travelling?

19th man? Jol always used to take a youngster. (Harry always used to take a goalkeeper, hence some of the odd benches during his reign.)

Tricky one now Super Jan is out, I'm leaning towards playing Fryers at LB and Dembele in a 3 covering near him, have Fryers available for any out balls but not go walkies up pitch too much, probably Chadli to start and add extra cover, so something like

Lloris
Walker Kaboul Chiriches Fryers
Holtby Sandro Dembele
Lamela Soldao Chadli

AVB was mumbling in the summer about not buying another left back on the strength of Fryers' faster than expected progression. If that was in the end why we didn't buy, and tomorrow it turns out that Fryers is currently our 4th rather than even 3rd choice LB, it'll look an even odder decision.

dembele and that hip... <shakes head> he's been dragging it for a long time and appears it's just never come back...

vertonghen's injury is not good and poor old paulinho requires a rest...

Fryers is miles away from 1st team PL duties IMO.

Sadly I still think he is our best available option with rose and vertonghen out. Naughton has had shown he is not up to the job so I'd take a gamble on a natural left back and hope he rises to the occasion

I would like to see

Lloris
Walker. Kabul Dawson. Chiriches

Sandro. Holtby

Lennon. Dembele Townsend
Soldado.
Chiriches has the pace to play full back, naughton is not a prem league player IMO.
Like to see dembele in a more positive forward role. Then try lamela for last 20 mins in the hole I believe this should be his position

We have got a big squad. Its three games in six days....we should use it and I expect AVB to do that just that. Particularly in midfield and attack.
Must be 3 games in 8 days surely? Otherwise all my plans for the Lpool game are screwed!

I'd like to see:

Lloris; Walker, Chiriches, Dawson, Fryers; Sandro, Dembele; Lennon, Holtby, Chadli; Soldado.

Friedal, Kaboul, Capoue, Holtby, Townsend, Lamella, Defoe.

Thinking is Dawson is experienced and can talk Fryers through as well as Sunderland putting balls into the box. Plus, I think Kaboul is knackered. Sandro and Dembele is a tried and tested couple and Paulinho looks tired. Lennon has looked good and Chadli seems strong and safe (like Park at Utd). Soldado just because I believe he is better than Defoe.

Shame to leave out Sigurdson and Adebayor but we've a big squad.

We'll have to agree to disagree.

I last watched Fryers against villa in the cup.

He was the worst player on the pitch by a country mile - and villa were horrific. Couldn't play a simple ball up the line.

He' still young, learning and could turn out to be a good player. As god awful a player that Naughton is, I still trust him more than Fryers, especially in a crucial PL game.

It's more to do with natural width but you have a point.

Chadli offers that natural width, mate. He's also significantly more disciplined than Townsend & offers considerably more protection for his fullback. I'd say that's why we looked so much more 'improved' against United, because Lennon & Chadli maintained the width of the pitch, so also maintained the shape of the whole team structure.

Personally, and I know next to nothing, I'd keep Townsend as someone to come off the bench & do 'his thing' after 70 minutes or so, against a tired bunch of defenders. In my opinion, Townsend still has much to learn as a player.
