Harry has come in for a bit of stick on here, on radio shows, in the papers and on TV for the team he fielded last night. Amazingly enough the only person I heard properly defending him in the media was Ian Wright.
Wrighty seemed to appreciate more than anyone else the importance of staying in the Premiership over a run in the UEFA Cup.
I want people to see the bigger picture here. First of all, the UEFA Cup, even IF we do progress, there's still a lot of big teams in it and if I'm honest I don't think we can win it this year, especially with all the important league games coming up. I think even Villa would do us over two legs.
And like it or not, some of you can't seem to accept this but WE ARE IN A RELEGATION BATTLE. What do you think Daniel Levy said to Harry when he brought him in, win everything? No fucking chance. He would have been told his priority is keeping this Club in the Premiership. The Carling Cup would have been secondary to that, then the UEFA Cup, then the F.A. Cup.
I don't think people are seeing the importance of what it could mean if we go down. Levy has long term plans for our Club, the stadium being the main one. I think this point carries more weight than any other. If we go down to the Championship there is no guarantee we'd bounce straight back up, players would leave and we'd have to rebuild. Going down would put back the stadium AT LEAST two years in my opinion and that is not something Levy will be willing to consider.
I for one would happily sacrifice every Cup competition this season if it means us staying up and being able to build for next season and the future with a new stadium. The fact is this season is one of the most important for our great Club in recent years because if we go down, the Club's future plans could be put back many years. All the good work people like Martin Jol put into recent seasons would mean nothing if we went down because it would take at least four years to get back to challenging for top six if we go down. The difference is if we stay up there's a chance we can push on a try for that next season.
