The funny thing about crouch (and other Arry signings)

People get all worked up saying "oh we're going nowhere Crouch is a mediocre midtable player" but the funny thing about it is he is a better player (and a much better signing) than the likes of Pavlyuchenko...but of course he has'nt got a five syllable surname and a sexy foreign mystique.

It would be the same story if we signed a player like Dunne or Distin....people would be up in arms over "uninspiring signings" but in fact they are ten times the player that people like Kaboul are yet people wet themselves over these "sexy" Kaboul type signings.

Now dont get me wrong. Im not over the moon with Crouch but this is the standard of player we have been signing for years....the difference is the other signings are usually wrapped in a sexy foreign packaging.

The bottom line is this is where we are as a club, Id rather call a spade a spade than keep deluding ourselves with signings like Pav, paying way over the odds for players who can supposedly take us to the next level when in reality they are not even better than what we have.

Crouch may not be a superstar, but at least its an honest signing.

Crouch isn't better than Pav. You're nuts mate. Pav played non-stop for 14 months or so. Think Crouch could do the same and still perform.

i agree with your sentiments bing regarding the unsexy packaging but have to agree with mich, crouch isnt a better player then pav, problem with pav is his attitude. even guus said it about his attitude he has all the ability in the world but doesnt knuckle down enough. if we could keep pav now that we've signed crouch i would be delighted

a honest signing!!...not possible with redknapp involved mate!!... crouch is no better than we already have which beggars the questions why!! when redknapps all out that we'll have a defensive shortage at center half come the liverpool game.
i would argue this signing is more about redknapp getting what he wants or getting out of his pram.

Crouch is just the sort of player we need - if we want to stay just behind the big boys. He adds something different to the balance of the squad but is not the sort of player to take us to the next level.

Those sort of players though are few and far between, and how many honestly would choose us given the position we are in now? They would only come for loadsamoney money (which is something we rightly do not do) - although they would say it was the challenge/project

some of you are a bit weird, crouch has proved he can score in the premiership, internationally and in the champions league but that doesnt seem enough, anyway Pav will be staying , Bent will be going. Crouch offers a completley different thing and also is talented if he wasnt , redknapp, capello and benitez are all idiots and im guessing you whiney lot probably know more about football and tactics.

Well imo Crouch is a much much better player than Bent.

Now presumably Harry thinks the same and saw the opportunity to sell Bent for 12 mil and get Crouch for 9.

When I heard about Crouch at first I was a bit gutted but when I thought about it it actually is'nt the worst piece of business, makes a lot of sense.

Of course I would've preferred Huntleaar but my point is if we're not going to get a Huntleaar I'd rather we get Crouch than Mohammed De'Mahoom the latest French/Cameroonian wonder kid who will set us back 16 million and be off to Sporting Lison next season for 5 million.

This argument is bull. He didn't play "non-stop for 14 months or so." He spent a lot of time on the bench when he was here last season. Plus he had a couple of injuries which would've allowed him to "rest" for a couple of weeks. And Pavlychenko's game isn't exactly the same as the likes of Rooney or Tevez, as he doesn't bust a gut chasing down every single ball. Hardly a reason for him to be as exhausted as so many people seem to claim.

I like Pavlychenko, I just really hate this excuse.

Could you clarify exactly what you think Harry is doing thats dishonest? Hasn't he been investigated by the Police re bungs etc and found innocent? or are you a detective yourself with some kind of insider knowledge on the matter? It sounds like one of those 'common foklore' type stories based on no facts whatsoever and the only thing that has changed since this stuff all started is that he is now OUR manager not Wham's so please, if you have some facts share them, if not, please stop your mindless, factless contributions about the manager of our team.

If Crouch is the answer then what the hell was the question? IMO if he wasnt 6ft 7 he wouldnt be a footballer.

He isnt a bad signing and unless he proves me wrong, I wont say that he is. But I feel we could still do better. I also understand the whole foreign packaging thing but isnt buying Bentley and Bent for over £30m worse? I mean, we got to watch these players every week for years and still spunked money on players who havent performed, if we could get the same quality abroad for less money then why not?

The key with Crouch is that HR has a proven track record with him. He will justfiy the price tag.

As a player Crouch has a decent goal scoring record and doesn't get injured alot. He's an acceptable signing. At least he wouldn't jump ship.

I don't think its about buying individual players who will take us to the next level, we tried that. Its about having a balanced team, all working for each other and each player knowing what is expected of him in his particular position, like everton, they don't spend a fortune on players each year but usually finish higher than us.

It's true though, when we were linked with Nikola Zigic people seemed to be a lot keener on the idea of us buying a lanky target man, despite the fact they've probably never seen him play. I don't know myself how good Zigic is compared to Crouch but my guess is that if we'd been linked with Petr Crouchovski, the unstoppable Serbian beast, rather than Peter Crouch, the ungainly English bloke who messed up the bicycle kick and it looked incredibly awkward, then people wouldn't be complaining so much.

We're effectively swaping Bent for Crouch and making a 3m profit on it, given that Crouch offers more than Bent I'm pretty happy with that.

Well, 40% on this forum didn't want to see him at Spurs so why aren't their opinions worth discussing?

They are. I believe fozzi was simply making the point that there are three million other threads discussing those opinions.

I agree Crouch is a better player than people think. I would not say he is better than Pav. He is a different type of player tho. Crouch Holds the ball up wellm, has got good control and skill. I like him. He is not amazing but I think he does more than people think.
