Living over in Central America I basically only read the BBC and S.C. to see what's going on back home. However I would be interested in knowing if the incompetent linesman that ruled Jan's goal offside the other day has been slated by the British press or any other institution for his stupidity

Not as much as you'd expect. More that they could see that he got confused by remembering the rule about there needing to be another player goal side if the keeper is up which made him forget the most basic rule of Jan being in his own half.

Nothing of a personal nature, but it's bought more scorn on the general officialdom of the Premier League.

Will take a howler in a big game for something to be *done*

It would have been given more attention if it had been a 'winning' goal but as we were 2 - 1 up, it passed by as a bad mistake. Would have had more attention if it had been a disallowed goal for Chelsea, United, Liverpool.

For a moment when I read the title of the thread I though we were talking about Pedro Mendes again.

Ho hum.

Mike Riley claiming that PL refereeing is "better than ever", once again showing that there are lies, dammed lies, and statistics:

http://www.theguardian.com/football...-defends-referees-standards-performing-better

What they seem to not want to admit is that big mistakes are being made still every week, and that they're mistakes that decide matches.

I think the common opinion amongst those that matter is that, over the course of 38 games per season, these decisions even themselves out.
You only need to look at Chelsea games to see this is somewhat true.
Jose almost exploded when they didn't get the penalty for handball against us, yet against Liverpool Costa did the exact same thing and no penalty was given. Jose didn't even mention that one afterwards!

It didn't happen to Man Utd or Chelsea so we won't hear much more about it.

Was going to post this myself.

If that had happened to a Fergie or Mourinho team the lino would never work in the Premier League again, and neither would Chris Foy.

And nor should they. It's gross incompetence from both of them and that level of fuck-up in any other job would be a sackable offence.

That lino has nothing else to do in his life except to know how offside works. This isn't his weekend hobby like in Sunday League, where it would still be inexcusable, this is his actual job that he gets paid to do and trains to do every day. Chris Foy's whole job is to control and game and if necessary overrule mistakes from his assistants, and he was standing next to Jan. The guy should never work in football again.

It should be completely unacceptable but instead the FA will ignore it, pretend it never happened, and we wait for the next time we get utterly fucked over by an incompetent/corrupt official/s.

I don't think that's too much of a robbery. When I watched the replays it looked like Jan's original shot was probably going wide.

surely a bit of discretion could be applied there. Nobody would've cried if Jan had been awarded it, least not John O'Shea!

I'd like him to get the goal, but the panel's job is basically to look at the original shot and see if it was going to go in, and if not, it's an own goal. This was pretty clear cut so I don't see what else they could do.
