The goalkeeper debate

After watching the game today and taking the season so far in consideration I wandered what other fans think about our current goalkeeping choice.

I only watched the second half today and thought that Cudicini did okay with a couple of decent saves and collected the ball once or twice. I did hear that he struggled in the first half though and was probably guilty for the goal.

I would play Gomes personally, especially in games like today where the ball was punted into our box on numberous occasions. For me, Cudicini's positioning is usually good but he is a bit small and doesn't command the box in the same way that Gomes does. Because of that, Gomes is probably more prone to error and that could of gone in Harry's thinking today.

What do you guys think?

I think Cudicini is okay, I think Gomes is better.

If he is fit we need to start playing him.

Disco Benny was woeful today and culpable for both goals, Cudicini did okay today but should have done better with both goals.

Gomes is the better keeper and probably would have been a better choice today given Bolton's aerial threat

Gomes all the way. Baffling why he isn't played. If nothing changes he'll probably want to go and we'll be stuck with geriatric mediocre Cudicini as first choice instead of one Europe's best young keepers. Knowing Harry he'll probably buy James to replace him.

I agree. Carlo is good but Gomes is better. You can never be sure what 'arry is thinking but it would be a sad day if James replaced Gomes. Gomes is, as you say, one of Europe's best young keepers and I hope he gets the chance to prove it.

My take on it is:

Cudicini is a decent solid prem goalkeeper nothing more

Gomes is a GREAT but flawed prem goalkeeper.

I'd take the flawed greatness over average every week

Their both pretty poor tbh.

Gomes has built up a bit of a cult following...maybe its a case of absence makes the heart grow fonder....but he's just as much a liability as Carlo.

One thing I felt Carlo showed today was that he is a bottler. Now Gomes is far from the bravest keeper in the world (in fact at times he's a downright wimp) but Carlo really was cowardly today. I feel if he had've been a bit braver we could've won the game.

Like I said its much of a much...Id personally lean towards Carlo because I think Gomes is too mad and makes the defence shaky.

On the way back from Bolton. Cudcini was woeful, he inspires absolutley zero confidence in his back four. Today was crying out for a forcefull and decisive defence . Cudcini was crap, Huddlestone was out muscled by Davies. BAE was poor by his own recent high standards. The windy weather didn't help.

Dawson and Gomes should both have started today, another week Harry's got the starting XI wrong

Thing is though:shrug: we've got 16 points from 8 games which is fantastic

Gomes every single day of every year. Bing, I respect your opinion. But it's wrong :)

At the end of the day we're currently 3rd in the table so Carlo and Keano are doing OK in my book

Gomes any day of the week for me. Cudicini is one of the best backups in the league, but Gomes' shot saving ability is ridiculously good

I can see why Harry went with Carlo today. He kept a clean sheet against Burnley, depsite a bit of an error, and selection is increasingly based on form rather than reputation, which is the way it should be.

However, I would expect Gomes to come back soon as I feel he is the better keeper. Carlo's ability seems to have diminshed, while Gomes is approaching his prime. Sure he can be erratic but he has put in some great performances and I think he will win us a lot more points than Carlo.

I'd like to see Gomes brought back in, we're just not keeping clean sheets, I'm not saying that's Carlo's fault, but Gomes believe it or not inspires more confidence for me.

Carlo is a great number 2 for me. Reliable, doesn't make many shocking erros but won't make many world class saves. Good to bring in for a couple of games, but in the long term won't save us and get us a win when we play badly. Gomes has the potential to pull of a world class save and win us a game when we're not at our best.

We arent going to keep clean sheets unless Woody and King play regularly; so above all we need someone who could organise the defence and inspire confidence. I can't see Carlo doing that with his punches. Gomes makes mistakes but he makes great saves. He entertains. So my choice is with Gomes.
