I can see what you're saying, however my scenario was, would you prefer;
If we played the next 10 years and finished top 4 in each but didn't win anything, or
During those 10 years we win a cup and miss out on top 4 that season.
I would pick the latter as we can generate all the money in the world but have nothing to show for it! Yes we might attract better players but what's the point of them if they don't win anything?

Portsmouth, wigan etc...

But yes i don't want to be another newcastle.

What for?

Biggest clubs have more fans, therefore more revenue for the likes of Sky with subscriptions, that's why they always favour them, that's why most media bend over for them.

It's why the BBC always show them live in the FA Cup also.

We're still seen as a feeder club for the likes of Man Utd and Man City

If you asked any Wigan or Portsmouth fan would they give up that FA Cup win and replace it with finishing 12th to 17th every season in the Premier League instead I doubt one would take it.

Right but Sky didn't favour us in the title run in with Leicester for example.

These journos are just hacks who happened to be employed by Sky giving their opinions. I don't see an agenda to keep the status quo, they're more likely to push Poch to Utd because it's a story which everyone is interested in in purely for clicks and revenue.

Same reason why they're shown more than others because they're a giant team with the most fans around the world so everything and everyone will be focused on them.

It's all a bit paranoid tin foil hat wearing Spurs fans thinking that everyone is out to get us. The media don't give a shit about us in that respect, they're not trying to distsblise Spurs - the truth is that we're currently not as big as the other clubs so they don't take us seriously.

Maybe. But for me i love the european away games. It is the glory nights, foreign city all together, night before, day, and hopefully after. Tbh i remember them more than winning the league cup.

Think @yankspurs said we need an allez allez allez song and was shut down. But when you hear the ultas at madrid or barca do it, would really love something like that at the new ground.

On the Sunday supplement Jonathan liew said the only manager available for the United job is Pochetino

I guess we can all let slide his 4 year contract

maybe all hold scarves and sing youll never walk alone aswell?

nah

Something like that.

We don't have anything like it in this country. When we played madrid (under redknapp) the noise was almost painful.
Barca they were good but it was so open.

Now I think I'm going down to the well tonight
And I'm going to drink till I get my fill
And I hope when I get old I don't sit around thinking about it
But I probably will
Yeah, just sitting back trying to recapture
A little of the glory of, well time slips away
And leaves you with nothing mister but
Boring stories of glory days

Glory days, well, they'll pass you by
Glory days, in the wink of a young girl's eye
Glory days, glory days
Glory days, well, they'll pass you by
Glory days, in the wink of a young girl's eye
Glory days, glory days

I think that this might have been a poor use of wording, he probably meant to imply that it is only Poch who fits what Utd re looking for as opposed to being "available "

That's all good and well, but if you put the two below different scenarios side by side, in reality which would be better;

Grandad speaking with his grandson in 20 years;

a, I remember when we were in the champions league, we got to visit great stadiums like Madrid, Barca, Juve. The food was really good and I got shit faced on sangria!

b, I'll never forget the day that we beat citeh in the FA cup final, we were massive underdogs but managed to scrape a 1-0 win! You should have seen the place afterwards, the whole of Wigan was bouncing for months.

For me this is a no brainer, yes I love the European nights and the fact that we get to play against the best players in the world, but I'd gladly swap that (short term) to win a trophy or two!

I know it's a fun debate but we have to change our way of looking at it. Football, more than ever, is a progressive endeavour and the long term benefits from finishing in the top four outweigh that of winning cups. And thus are more likely to provide future cup wins!

History is not doing the remembering - fans are. I’d rather be playing top brass teams with the top class players afforded and attracted by being in the CL.

Hypotheticals like this are always going to be subjective. If I were the grandson listening to those stories I think I would be more interested in the stories of travelling around Europe and going to those famous stadiums. As a fan now I get more enjoyment out of watching those European games and having league games that actually mean something beyond just survival.

Do you think the grandson in your example is going to become a lifelong Wigan supporter because his Grandad told him a story about them winning the FA cup? Or would he pick between Liverpool and the two Manchester clubs because they are the nearest "big" club? He might be a Wigan fan just because his family is but he'll come to realise how far behind they are before long.

I'm not saying you're wrong in preferring to win a trophy than play against the best teams in the world - it's your opinion and you're welcome to it. But there are plenty of fans who (I think) prefer watching the big games every season rather than hoping for a domestic trophy once per decade. Neither opinion is wrong.

But I would say that your scenario A is likely to lead to multiple scenario Bs, whereas scenario B has little bearing on any further Bs given how much money is in the game these days. Being top 4 and winning trophies are both symptoms of being a good team (top 4 more so - just ask Wigan), but being top 4 is a far more reliable way of remaining a good team.

And all of this has nothing to do with Pochettino as far as I can tell. Unless he's the mystery grandad?

How many clubs have there own versions of allez allez allez? A ton. Its not just a bin dipper song anymore.

It's based on an old Italian disco song, and has been doing the rounds it Italy and southern Europe for years. Napoli are probably most famous for it. It about as much a "Liverpool chant" as the ones based on Sloop John B.

I watched this and what he actually said was Poch "is the best manager available"... and none of the other hacks said: "But he's not available, he's a year into a 5-year contract."
But then we wouldn't expect them to, would we?
