I am not sure the issue is simply "money" - I think the issue is more nuanced, in that there is money to be spent, but it goes against Levy's nature to overpay for a player (or pay too much in Agent's fees).

The problem is that our competition will overpay to get players - which is really just another way of saying, the market-rate is rising, and we seem to be the only ones not to realize it. When Liverpool bought Alisson and VVD - both fees were considered to be "too high" - and yet now nobody thinks about the price paid.
also selling clubs will hold out much longer eg If Villa miss out on promotion, they won't just accept £35 million for JG, they will ask for £50 million and then we get the stand off which can go on until the last few days of the transfer window. Other clubs will also be circling for him and Sessegnon. It's going to be tough to get these players in , whatever change of attitude there is at the club by DL or Poch.

This. Nail on head; it’s not necessarily about spending £85 mil on a player, it’s about trusting Pochettino’s choices in the market, paying what’s needed to acquire those targets, and accepting that squeezing every last penny out of a deal, to the point of negligent brinkmanship, is not indicative of the behaviour of a ‘big club’ that has a winning mentality.

I don’t know. How are we doing this year ? Are you not entertained ?

I am happy but we were talking about spending money on players. Poch obviously wants our approach to change (as do we all). But there is no guarantee that it will.

Poch is highly unlikely to leave this summer. The only way that happens is if Levy opts not to make the investment in players Poch wants, after promising to back him. He has every right to implore the owners to think big and do what's needed to evolve the team through the next phase. Everything is in place to be successful and make sensible risks if needed. It's not like a Leeds situation where a team spends well beyond its means and has no fall-back option or capacity to overcome a financial setback. Our situation now is actually quite brilliant, as we have a solid infrastructure in place that can manage moderate financial risks.

Poch wants us to become a club that isn't seen as a notch below the giants of Europe, but rather on par with them all. Yes, that's a grandiose ambition, but you can't argue that we don't have the sorta foundation in place that is designed to elevate our team to the level of the traditional titans of Europe.

I think the real money will come after a full season in the new stadium.
Maybe. But after a year of abstinence - and a windfall from CL - I expect we will see a fair amount of money change hands this summer. Some going, some coming - so it may not be a huge net spend.

If your mortgage was paid off you would have a bigger disposable income no?

The new stadium is the equivalent of me having my salary doubled overnight (this is what our new stadium and regular CL brings). That's where you get the disposable income. I could go and buy a couple of extra cars on finance no problems, lovely.

Levy has said in his own words the pay back will be long term. The only way this stadium hurts us on the pitch is if the owners use it as a narrative to cover a lack of ambition. Like Arsenal.

Frenkie De Jong recently admitted he came close to joining us last summer, why would we bother unless we were willing to pay serious money?

I think we'll bite the bullet on things like agents fees on key targets going forward, I believe that was the case when Bale left and Baldini was zipping around Europe sealing deals. Last year was a one-off IMHO, extraordinary circumstances.

This interview is slightly older than the newest quotes, but I think the talk at around 5:45 and forward is very much about the discussion we've had here the last 2 days. Poch says it himself - we need to change our focus now, and the mentality at the club, on all levels, should only be on winning.

We've been reporting record turnover year on year for years now with no increase on net spend.
I hope you are right and we splash the cash but there is no evidence that we will. Poch's statements suggest he wants it to change but going to the media suggests he hasn't been given any promises.

At the end of the day neither of us know what our transfer budget will be in the summer.

He’s not trying to say anything. He’s saying it.

What Pochettino is saying is simple, basic common sense.

5 years ago we had a plan, basically constructed around building and moving into a new stadium while at the same time improving the results on the pitch so that we became seriously competitive at the highest level.

We’ve achieved that in spades. The original plan has become redundant and now we need a new one.. This is obviously correct, uncontroversial and totally normal.

Yet because we’re all so deeply emotionally involved, we’re reading all sorts of things into it.

It’s a neutral, common sense statement. He’s said it’s not about spending more or less money. He’s said he needs to listen to Levy. It’s about agreeing a plan with clear, realistic and shared objectives and targets for the second 5 years of his management career at Spurs, which, obviously and correctly it would be stupid not to have.

The one thing it’s very evidently not is a veiled message to force Levy to cough up more dough. The budget will be an important part of the discussion but as a Pochettino himself said, it’s not about spending more or less money. It’s about being clear what you’re aiming for now that you’ve completed the first set of objectives.

It’s basically about knowing exactly what his job for the next phase is now that he’s completed the first task he was given. That isn’t a threat or a clandestine plea for more money. It’s more important, more sensible and more constructive than that.

Brilliant brilliant post ?️

100%. I'm not even sure if the club has a set one to be honest, I think they have a rough idea but take each player on a case by case basis.

My point is simply that we have had such a huge revenue growth in the last two years that there simply HAS to be money there to be spent on transfers and wages, should the club wish to use it. Not enough to make the Mancs jealous but certainly enough to compete with the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea, and certainly enough to allow us to be (even) more competitive.

Your faith in Levy will dictate the rest I guess. This is where we diverge!

I will argue the point about us not using the increased revenue however, Kane's huge new deal and Poch's £8m a year deal in the summer were hugely significant and extremely competitive, and certainly a huge step up from our old capabilities.

Lloris, Son, Dele, Lamela and Sanchez all got decent rises too. Wages are arguably even more important than transfer spend in being competitive.
