The race for a Champions League place

You could keep doing ifs and buts until you've won the league.

Its the way I'm looking at it.

I can accept losing, or not winning, but I'll never accept a lack of effort which is what we got that day.

MP needs to drum this into our squad over the summer, anything can happen in the league and they must keep going, not resign themselves to 5th or 6th, fuck fancy football make work rate, drive and determination our new ethos, the Utd and Liverpool slumps in form are another reminder of what might have been, our attitude for years has been too carefree.

I agree but neither of those teams have Aguero. Him against our defence is pretty scary. Last season at home he was only on the pitch half the game but destroyed us in that time. I can't see much being different this time round with our awful defending.

Saying that I'm still going to the game. You never know, sure we had bale but we beat them 3 1 two seasons ago.

We Citeh have Toure, Kompany and Jovetic all out. The only way we stand a chance is for everyone to put in maximum effort. It should also be noted that Lollerpuddle have to got to play Chelscum and Manure have to play Le Arse at home. All we can do is win our games and see what happens. Seven/eight(goal difference) off CL places with a game in hand, Carrick injured and therefore Man Utd are adrift in midfield yet think they are already safe, Liverpool are stumbling so a win today puts us right back in it.

Regardless of top 4, finishing 5th instead of 6/7th has big implications on our season next year. 5th will get us direct entry to the Europa League group stages rather than faffing around with 2 or even 4 qualifying games if we finish 6/7th. Infact i'm of the view that we need to prove ourselves in the Europa League before we start thinking we're good enough to compete in the Champions League. Sure, i'd love for us to be in the CL, but we've been in the EL something like in 8 of the last 10 seasons and we've done bugger all. I'd be extremely content if we beat Liverpool to 5th. We can annoy ourselves with ifs and buts, but if United hadn't lost the last three games no one would be having this conversation.

But they did and that's the whole point in case. Still, I don't see us finishing 4th anyway.

Ultimately, Poch made some terrible team selections after the Arsenal/Liverpool games which cost us momentum and any chance of his supposed philosophy working. How many times did we roll our eyes when the same players kept getting picked after sub standard performances.
Plus the lack of motivation in most of these performances I put down to the manager.

exactly.. the foresight is clearly lacking.. it's the 'what ifs' that will make Poch pounding his chest on how close he can be to a UCL spot next season.. if only he can rile the team to be more opportunistic from the Burnley game onwards..
