I have found the gradual transformation of the modern day striker fascinating. It has got to a point now where a striker has to be efficient at pretty much everything besides keep goal to be a success at a top club. I found this bit in me dailly email from the Times interesting.

ASK THE EXPERT: THERE IS A STRIKER BETTER THAN DROGBA

Today, we ask: "Is Carlo Ancelotti right to call Didier Drogba the best striker in the world?"

Tony Cascarino responds: "When Didier Drogba has got the bit between his teeth he is as good as anyone in the world. But the problem I have with Drogba is that he isn't always mentally right and that has cost Chelsea in the past, in fact his attitude has probably cost them at least one Champions League title.

"Is Drogba as good a finisher as Fernando Torres? No. Does he have more of a physical presence and is he more of a handful for defenders? Yes. But if it came down to a choice between the two, I would take Torres because I could trust him to produce the goods time after time.

"Outside of those two, you look at Barcelona's Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He has started this season sensationally, but we have seen him drift in and out of games in the past and he doesn't have the consistency to threaten Torres and Drogba. Elsewhere, Real Madrid's Karim Benzema is a player who could develop into one of the world's best.

"Wayne Rooney is certainly among the best forwards. He has been moved into a more central role this season after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo but until he scores 20-plus league goals a season, which he hasn't done at Manchester United, he can't be considered alongside Torres and Drogba."

I really dont think Spurs will break the top 4 until we find a striker like this. He needs to be tall, strong, aggressive, good finisher, good header, quick, the lot really! They are few and far between. Any ideas who might be the next one to come through?

Batistuta and Vieri were the epitome of that. I loved watching those two. It's hard to see the next young players as all the hype around youngsters is about the flair players. It will probably be an unknown african to make a name for themselves in france. However, Lisandro Lopez fits this mould but he's just gone to Lyon for £20m. Huntelaar looked like he could be a world beater until he joined Real. Also, Balotelli looks an absolute beast with a good touch, and he's still very young.

Theirry Henry at his peak. It is unreal that he never won WPOTY, but that Ronaldinho and that Zidane were playing extra special stuff back then.

In 2001/02 season Henry was top scorer with 25 league goals and I cant see how many assist he made.

In 2002/03 season Henry scored 23 league goals and had 23 league assists, wtf? 2nd top goalscorer and top assists - How didn't he win?

In 2003/04 Henry scored 30 league goals and had 8 league assists - top league goalscorer again.

In 2004/05 Henry scored 25 league goals and had 16 league assists - top league goalscorer and 2nd assists.

Drogba is the most complete striker I have ever seen. If he can consistently play at the top level for a few more years he will be remembered as one of the best ever. It is a shame he is not from one of the footballing superpower nations, as alas, he will not achieve the greatness he deserves on the world stage.

Vieri and Batitstuta are great shouts. Shevchenko was great at Milan as well. Crespo at Parma too.

Berba is the closest we've had since Klinsmann really. Sir Les wasnt far off but he was a bit sluggish.

Christiano Ronaldo for me. I know he is often classed as a winger, but he really does have everything going for him as a striker. That 07/08 he was untouchable. Scored goals like a natural goalscorer, run past people with pace and finesse, displayed sick skills and had everything about his game. Headers, volleys, set pieces etc. When you're talking about a striker who does more than just score goals, then Ronaldo is the total striker.

Ronaldo at Barca was the best iv ever seen from a striker. On Drogba, 12 games this season, 11 goals and 8 asissts that is the sign of a total striker. I know he is a theatrical, petulant tosser but I would have him for spurs over any striker in the EPL

For me a total striker, not a top striker, but a total striker needs the following attributes;

Pace
Strength
Awareness
Control
Accuracy
Potentcy
Teamwork
Aerial ability
Vision

There is only 1 player currently playing that has these consistently.
