The worst season supporting spurs?

Agree with the OP. It's obviously not been the worst season in regards to where we've finished or the points we've accumulated but there's been so many games this season where I've just not given a fuck. I can't remember the last time I've celebrated wildly like I usually do every goal. I don't know how or why it's come to this but there's been times where I've just not cared as much and, despite all the suffering that comes with supporting Spurs, I'd never thought that could happen.

Given the expectations coming into the season, our football has been boring, atmosphere at the Lane has been poisonous and I've hated the manager for the best part of 6 months; not to mention that I don't feel that much warmth or enthusiasm for too many of our players either.

The players this season lack self respect, I've seen shit teams in the past, but at least they tried or seemed to care. This bunch don't give a fuck!

I think it is unfair to compare this season to any in the Sugar years.
The club had effectively gone broke, and those dead years were our punishment.
Most other teams have gone down in similar situations.

Like most teams, most seasons we are not going to come close to winning anything,
but at least there are the local bragging rights to focus on.
We got a point at home to a 10 man chelsea.
That is it, even with the 2 extra london cup games thrown in. Very poor.

I think the fact that Liverpool and Everton have done so well made it worse for us this year. Finishing behind City, Arsenal, Chelsea, and normally United, has always been a given. Liverpool have outdone themselves and taken United place. Everton have snuck up and they deserve their spot. However, you've got to consider that despite our turgid football, and very disappointing season, Everton have played brilliantly and done well as a club, yet only finish 3 points above us or level if they lose next week.

The only thing I can think of is that next year we'll be considered as underdogs, moreso than now. We won't have spent the same money and there won't be as high expectation. Liverpool will be expected to mount a title challenge, United too if they get LVG in. Everton will probably have more pressure on them than us because of the way they came so close this year and Martinez looks to be building something really good. It just means we have to make the right choices this summer when it comes to players and a manager or we'll risk getting left behind. It's going to be a huge summer for the club......again.

I'm just glad our matches weren't as available via tv and internet for the most part of '90s and early noughties as today; my love for the club has suffered a lot from watching all matches this season - and I can't imagine what those post-Scholar Sugar-years would have done if I had to watch and experience all shit this club pulls off way too often, both on- and off-field...

It's amazing how often people forget the impact that money has had to our fortunes. You simply cannot judge the current period with previous years because we have no chance of competing for the title now.

In the 90's we never had the money of Chelsea and Man City (and Arsenal) to contend with, along with the experience and sheer size of clubs like Liverpool, Man Utd and Arsenal. There were usually two clubs competing for the title each year and the rest were much of a muchness.

However all of those clubs mentioned are now bigger, have more experience, have more money, have better players and better managers than us.

If you are using where we finish, along with how we play as a barometer then get used to a lot more seasons like this. The last few seasons have been a blip in terms of where we 'should' finish.

We're 6th for a very good reason.

It's funny because when we were overachieving people were still asking for our manager to be sacked, or were criticising our style - completely oblivious to the facts of life. We simply haven't got the infrastructure to sustain a challenge or to maintain our squad or any positions where we finish highly.

Don't get me wrong, I agree, however. Although city will probably win the league, Liverpool have challenged and will be above Chelsea despite having less resources, Everton will finish above us despite less resources. Money is a massive factor but so is competence and tactical know how.

For me this is worse than any of the seasons I experienced in the 90s. Back then, we all knew we had a pretty poor team, but we lived in hope, the fans made the most of the good times, and we generally expected the worst.

Harry's last season was without a doubt the most crushingly disappointing end to a season (thanks Bayern), but that season also provided some incredible moments.

This season is particularly bad because of how far we've dropped away from the CL teams. Picking up a lot of points against generally weak opposition doesn't mask the fact that we've dropped down a level from where we were a couple of years ago.

Humiliation after humiliation, blowing most of our Bale cash on players that have either performed poorly, or haven't featured at all, sacking a manager that had us playing the most tedious football I can ever remember, and replacing him with a cocky rookie that seems to take enjoyment from unsettling most of our squad, and finally, some of the most apathetic performances imaginable from the majority of our players.

For me the worst thing about this season is how little emotion I feel about the club. There have been far too many times where we've scored, and I've reacted with about as much enthusiasm as I would if I were watching some Algerian league two reserves game. I feel no connection to the 'manager', or indeed to most of our players (the best of which will probably be looking to jump ship as soon as possible).

The general lack of passion and interest from our team has spread to many of our fans, and for me that's what makes this such a terrible season. I'm not angry, I'm not sad, I'm just numb. No season has ever left me feeling so disconnected from Tottenham Hotspur.
Might be an idea to give up watching football then Jerry! I think I will if I ever get to that state of mind. :(

Not even close, looks like we're going to finish 6th place. That can't be the worse season unless you've been supporting spurs since Redknapp took us to 5th.

The worst season for me was 1975 - 76, the year we were relegated. There have been many more years worse than this one although this must rank as one of the most frustrating. We have a lot of apparently good players but not a good team, you just have to wonder if we actually have a defensive coach!

I'm avoiding channeling this at you, because you are pretty reasonable, it seems. But I suppose I just think answers like yours above ultimately twist things to make it seem worse than it is. People genuinely love moaning and spend most of their time doing so.

In response to your post, the Everton example isn't relevant. They've done what we did when we narrowly missed out. Our fans wouldn't be happy with that, and I doubt they will sustain this form next year. Even if they do, then they will be scrapping around for that 4th place and wont be that much closer to winning the title.

Competence and tactical know how will only get you so far. A combination of money, experience and good players wins you titles. And we are well down the pecking order on all of those.

Have you enjoyed this season? If you're gonna make it by league position then didn't jol get us 6th a few times? I always remember being more entertained during that reign

I'm hoping it's just a temporary glitch. Found it difficult to get excited about AVB's Spurs because it was just so bloody boring, and under Sherwood we've just looked indifferent.

I still come back for more though. It's not all about winning for me...I just want a team that looks like it gives a damn.

This only feels so bad after the expectations and joy of the last summer transfer window. Remember the signing of 3 players in one day? Felt like we had a season of good things ahead.

I've seen far worse seasons than this. Performance and results wise.

So bad it was tragically funny. Gallows humour required.

For me this has been the worst season. We had so much optimism coming in and within 4 months it went pear shaped, a manager losing the plot, toxic fans, injuries, and the appointment of a doofus manager. Sure we have had worse easily, remember 2000-2005, but this season genuinely just felt shit got more joy watching other teams.

It looks like we haven't done much defensive work all season and definitely no coach.

Yep, fingers crossed I'll have the time and money to actually get to a game next season (plus a few extra quid for a pint or ten).
