I know it isn't what he was making his point about, but even calling association football "soccer" riles me - it's so bloody American!

True, but they are playing Rugby football so he couldn't say "football". I suppose he could've said "association football", but that's a bit of a mouthful.

How can the yanks call a game in which your feet never touch the ball, football?

It doesn't make sense.

Good refereering but players might get confused if we get refs telling them it's not soccer...

I know. Pretty sure we had football first as well...

AF should be called Hand Egg like the famous picture says.

Soccer's not an Americanism; it's simply a corruption of Association, akin to rugger and rugby.

I wish 'soccer' players had half as much respect for the refs as they do in rugby. Would improve the game no end.

Sadly I don't see that ever happening because the authorities in football don't back the refs like they do in rugby.

Rugby is called Rugby football

the ref isnt American

They regularly kick the ball in Rugby though don't they?

Oh isn't he? The Welsh accent is very similar to an American accent though isn't it? :-|

Its not just that sadly. Its inherent in the culture. Manipulating the referee's judgement for advantage. Criticising the referee for anything that goes wrong. Putting the element of doubt in a referee'm mind. Questioning every decision and appealing all manner of things. Constant disrespect for referees from players, managers and supporters at all levels of the game. I could go on.

Football is all about win at all cost and damn the consequences. Probably so far removed from the word "sport" as it can be. Sport requires "sportsmanship" and not in the pseudo professional sense.

In "soccer" the referee is often seen as the target rather than the facilitator of the game.

When I first settled in Canada, people laughed at me when I told them I played football because I am just 5' 6". But I had the last laugh when I told them the whole world knows what I mean except the "suckers" in North America call the most beautiful game on earth soccer.

 love that. Nigel Owens is the best ref in rugby I reckon!

I wish football had the same respect for referees you see in rugby.

They backed Chris Foy. And the joke of a ref that sent off Milijas.

An open mike for the ref would be so interesting...it would really shut a lot of players up. The players also know that a disputed decision can also be resolved by video replay so there is no need for the players to take a hissy-fit.

I'd love to see FIFA attack the problem of players harassing referees during games. Surely a rule whereby only captains are allowed to interact with the referee wouldn't be that hard to implement and enforce?
