Tottenham Hotspur mull over move for Toby Alderweireld
Tottenham Hotspur are considering making a move for Toby Alderweireld in the summer with a view to partnering the Belgium centre back alongside Jan Vertonghen, his compatriot and former Ajax team-mate.
Alderweireld was on the north London club’s shopping list a couple of years ago but he left the Dutch club for Atlético Madrid where things never worked out. He joined Southampton on loan in the summer, and although the south coast club are expected to try and sign him on a permanent deal at the end of the season, he has attracted interest from Tottenham and Manchester City.
It is unclear how a move for the 25-year-old would affect Tottenham’s interest in Winston Reid when his West Ham United contract expires at the end of the season. Reid, the centre back, is expected to return from a hamstring injury to play for the east London side who visit White Hart Lane on Sunday having missed three games. The New Zealand defender has declined to comment on his future except to say on social media that it was wrong to say Arsenal was his favoured destination.
