Tottenham Hotspur mull over move for Toby Alderweireld

Tottenham Hotspur are considering making a move for Toby Alderweireld in the summer with a view to partnering the Belgium centre back alongside Jan Vertonghen, his compatriot and former Ajax team-mate.

Alderweireld was on the north London club’s shopping list a couple of years ago but he left the Dutch club for Atlético Madrid where things never worked out. He joined Southampton on loan in the summer, and although the south coast club are expected to try and sign him on a permanent deal at the end of the season, he has attracted interest from Tottenham and Manchester City.

It is unclear how a move for the 25-year-old would affect Tottenham’s interest in Winston Reid when his West Ham United contract expires at the end of the season. Reid, the centre back, is expected to return from a hamstring injury to play for the east London side who visit White Hart Lane on Sunday having missed three games. The New Zealand defender has declined to comment on his future except to say on social media that it was wrong to say Arsenal was his favoured destination.

Wanted him this summer, far better than Fazio.

Depending on price would be a good signing

If Dier keep improving with the pace he's done so far I can't see Spurs going for him nor see Toby wanting to join Spurs to sit on the bench - as he won't oust Jan from the team.

He seems to be flashing us a bit of leg with his quotes today from the Telegraph:

“I would like to play with Jan Vertonghen again,” said Alderweireld. “But a transfer will be arranged later, not now. Atlético will decide my future, but I would like to stay in the Premier League. That some of the big clubs show interest proves I’m doing well.”

Not very nice for Southampton.

No, what with him saying this and Schneiderlin earlier in the season talking up his desire to play for a big club, I feel quite sorry for them (especially as we're level pegging with them right now). Seems heritage still plays a big part in decisions.

RCB - Alderwiereld/Dier
LCB - Vertonghen?/Wimmer

This doesnt look good for Fazio does it, we could buy both wimmer and Alderwiereld with the Fazio, Chiriches and Kaboul money.
Jury still out on Jan staying.

Sell Jan after Alderveireld signs and bring in rough and tough, no fancy haircut, Addenour. .... meaner, tougher, faster and stronger.
