I would swap all day every day really. Not that we could afford Torres' wages anyway.

There is still a quality player in there, he needs games and someone like Harry to give him a hug.

We need a world class striker more than we need Modric. Huddlestone, Pienaar and even van der Vaart can play Modric's role

Torres with Adebayor as backup would give us an outside chance of 4th next season .

Buy Torres and a couple of other proper players and Modric may decide to stay .

So long as he's over his injuries and able to play regularly it shouldn't be a problem .

The alternative is a stream of also rans who will disappoint and give much worse value for money .

Bus-Conductor ,

Given that Chelsea won't sell Torres to us , which other strikers should we be going for in this sort of range ?

Spot on.

On our shores we have the likes of Dembele and Cabaye who can offer us possibly even more than Modric. Ander Herrera and Ever Banega in Spain are perfect targets, and before he moved to AC Milan, Montolivo would have been perfect.

To suggest Modric is irreplaceable is ridiculous, no player is bigger than the club. Whilst he is a superb player, he is not a match winner, he is not a big game player.

For the right club Modric IS a match winner . That is why Chelsea and Man Utd are after him and why he doesn't want to play alongside losers at Spurs .

Four years later we still haven't replaced Berbatov .

The business model is buying players we can turn a profit on . We are not in the market for like for like replacements .

Calling me a "space cadet" does wonders for your argument, cheers.

I used Dembele and Cabaye as examples of players we could bring in to replace Modric, players who we can realistically sign and who are proven in this league and are only going to get better. Cabaye has outperformed Modric all season, Dembele outshone Modric at WHL. I agree that Modric is a better player, but I for one do not think replacing Modric with Cabaye/Banega/Herrera will be catastrophic to our team.

Whereas you think Modric is "irreplaceable", I think there are far more realistic options out there to replace him then there are strikers who are good enough to lead the line and take us into the top 4.

It took us 2.5 years of Zokora and Jenas before we replaced Carrick.

It has taken us 4 years and counting to replace Berbatov.

Moneyball doesn't work, especially not with Redknapp at the helm.

I think that is more down to bad transfer strategy and scouting than the players not being out there and available.

To be fair we did try to get Juan Mata last summer which would have been perfect but Chelsea got in first and are set until Barca/Madrid come in for him some day

Did Chelsea get in first or did we dick around trying to steal him for half price ?

Other than Modric we are rubbish at closing the deals .

All the reports and ITK and stuff from Balague was that we were mad keen and were willing to pay the price but Mata was not sure if he wanted to leave Valencia. As things dragged on Chelsea came in and blew us out of the water on wages. Basically Mata wasn't sure Spurs was a step up from Valencia.

Yeah like I've said a few times today, Comolli was a bit of a plonker but he did deals for Bale, Kaboul, Modric, Berabatov, Zokora, all very quietly and quickly. I think thats what the club is lacking at the moment.

I would have to side with those that are saying Modric is replaceable. I watch the team as much as possible and I love Modric. He is a breathtaking performer. Yet, he hasn't played with the same passion this year, as he did last. There are other options out there and I am not realistically thinking a swap for Torres is one of them. But if we can get top dollar, then I would. We can't have a player that doesn't want to be here. He has stated that he wants to move on with the way he plays. Personally I would rather have someone that puts the ball in the back of the net a bit more. Modric is amazing at what he does, but he lacks that ability in the final third.

We're going to have more than an outside shot at 4th anyway but we won't be getting Torres, no chance at all.

We shouldn't be aiming for a quick fix now and I think Levy is going to take the reins on this one and try to build something lasting. You only had to watch us for the last 3 or 4 months to realise that if we didn't need some big changes last summer (which I would agree we didn't we needed a few additions to move complete a decent squad) then we do now. No longer can Gallas and King be relied upon to cover the defence. That weakness at the back was exposed repeatedly over the last months of the season especially with BAE out and Walker playing injured. So we will start to rebuild from the back (adding Vertonghen, Caulker and Naughton suddenly gives us a really nice young defensive group to build on) and then add some more potency up front. That potency isn't going to come from a big reputation and huge wage like Torres, we simply can't afford it.

Fully confident we are going to improve a lot of areas significantly this summer.

I'd take him but not for Modric. He lost confidence just like Kaka when that huge transfer fee was tied around his neck, although it was his one choice. If he came here he'd not have the pressure of having to score so often as he'd be part of a team, so yea I'd take him.

So what your saying is you dont watch spurs cos if you think we can replace modric your fucking barmy

We can't replace him but we can get something different and just as good. I'm convinced that if we had a midfield of Fellaini and Sandro, behind VDV, Bale, Lennon/Remy, and a quality striker, that would be as good or probably better than what we have now. Especially if we could sort the defense out with a new younger goalkeeper and CB (Vertonghen).

One thing I can guarantee you is we will never have a player like Adebayor as back up

modric for sahin + cash is the best deal we can get imo. straight up replacement, sahin is unsettled, and we get some cash too.
