From Skysports -
Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has hailed Chelsea's Ricardo
Carvalho as the best defender in the Premier League.

The Spaniard enjoyed a superb first season in the Premier League but he believes his job was made easier by some poor defending.

He found most of the centre-backs he came across to be more brawn than brains, and admits he was able to capitalise on some careless mistakes.

One exception was Carvalho, who Torres feels does not get the credit he deserves.

Torres rates the Portugal international above his Chelsea team-mate John Terry and thinks he is one of the most impressive defenders in world football.
"Terry is captain so gets a much higher profile. But he's only secondary to Carvalho," Torres told The Sun.

"Ricky is superb. He has every quality that is needed."

Torres added: "The central defenders (in the Premier League) are usually big, strong, aggressive lads.

"I guess it is probably because of these characteristics that the majority think they can solve problems by getting tough with me.

"But the truth is most of them lack defensive positioning as a result of their reliance on strength and aggression and leave so much space for you to take advantage of."

Agree completely with Torres - defenders are pretty poor in the EPL and definitely the best IMO is Carvalho!

Agree about Terry.

He hasn't played against King yet I don't think.

I think Carvalho is the mutts nuts  I had him in my dream team for Euros in Portugal.

I hope King can play against Torres and show his class

I think with Torres' vast experience of the Premiership he ought to know a thing or two.

Our Ledley'll sort him out.

Ledley is very very quick, Torres may be able to make a fool out of Dawson and co, but players rarely get passed Ledders

I disagree with Torres. I just think in the Prem we tend to player a higher defensive line and therefore there is more space for strikers to expoite. This very much suites Torres style of play and therefore he find things easier. But the likes of Kanoute, Forlan, Suker and Milosevic, have all struggled in the Prem and found things much easier in La Liga. Nicolas Anelka has a similar game to Torres, in that he too likes to get in behind defenders, and he struggled in La Liga, but has been more successful here. I think he's made the mistake of thinking that becasue the style of play in the Prem helps him, the defenders are inferior. I suggest he takes note of just how many Prem defenders are key players for big teams in Euro 2008. Though I agree with him about Terry.

Also, 1002 goals were conceded in the Prem this year, compared to 1021 in La Liga. In the CL Prem teams conceded 34 goals in 48 games, whilst La Liga sides conceded 37 goals in 34 games. So our defenders can't be that bad.

Looks like someone is going to get a few kicks in the shins and ankles next season for those comments.

The second season can sometimes be harder than the first in the premier league, so he wants to be a bit careful about what he says about opposition players.
