Thinking about it, we are no different to Real Madrid. In the last 2 summers we have poached Ajax's 2 best players in Vertonghen and Eriksen. Therefore how are we any different to Real Madrid, in that we are poaching players from clubs below us in the football ladder.

Did we tap their players up? Did we set up a massive shit storm to turn the players' heads? Did we make public statements about how well the players would fit in at our club? Did we disrespect the selling club an entire summer?

No. Both Verts and Eriksen where at the end of their contracts, wanted a new challenge and we moved for them in a legitimate manner.

Mainly cos we don't use our ex-players and current players to tap up players and act like complete twats in the press - assuming that a player is already our's?

Both Verts and Eriksen had just one year on their contracts, and were ready to leave - Ajax knew that. We bid - we did business. There's no hard feelings...

Real Madrid and us on the other hand....

Somebody will have waay more examples than me, but for a start, we didn't put Eriksen or Vertonghen's shirts on our online store until they'd actually signed for us. You are correct, but there is a way to go about buying players, and Real Madrid do it in such a disrespectful way. Not that I don't appreciate them buying us our new team!

Edit: some people did have more examples than me (y)

Everyone knows there is a pecking order in the transfer market.

Bigger/wealthier clubs will buy talented players from clubs with less wealth.

But there are rules against certain practices which unfortunately are sometimes hard to enforce. One of them is tapping players up. That is what RM blatantly did this summer in their pursuit of Bale.

Unbelievable that anyone can't see the difference between buying players from clubs who will sell and the tactics Madrid used this summer.

Ajax are built on a "develop to sell" system, and are at the pinnacle of their national system. You need only look at their response to selling their players on to see how different they feel because they know their players won't reach the very top of football with them. Keeping our best players and growing in OUR league to the point of reaching the pinnacle wouldn't see us on a level below Real Madrid.

So we should only take them from the teams above us? o_O I think you may have had one to many JD's......

We didn't tap them up.
We didn't keep putting made up stories in the papers
Our players didn't keep talking about the players
We are not in an agreement with the other clubs where we are meant to work together

So apart from the obvious differences, yes we are exactly the same in buying players to improve the squad

I must have missed the article where Levy stated that Eriksen was born to play for Spurs.

Got a link?

Erm... yes, we "poached" two players who wanted to come to WHL.

  • We did not shit storm the papers with our ex players saying, we should be allowed to talk to them.
  • Nor did these players go on a strike and not train.
  • We went through proper channels and brought them over.
  • We have a wage structure, which we do not break to keep them thinking that they are the "man" in the team(G Bale being the exception I sppose).
  • We are not plastics, we are here for the love of the club, not cause of the history of 5 UCLs or most number of UCLs in history. We are here cos we love the club for one reason or the other.
  • Finally, we do not buy big headed egos who can't play in a team.
Other than how these two players can walk into most of the teams on the planet, I do not see how we are similar to Real Madrid in any which way.

We treated them with respect and they were happy to do business with us and we also didnt chase their player for the whole season.

Also they had to sell both players as they only had one year left on his contract.

The difference is that Ajax have based their entire business model around their amazing academy. They've done it for decades now. They raise up one generation after another of superb players in the foreknowledge that they'll sell many of them at a profit. You don't have to poach players from Ajax or tap them up. They sell talented young players every year as part of their financial plan to keep their club solvent.

No, but we didn't pay 140m euro either. We took Vertonghen and Eriksen for much less than their market value.

The OP is fundamentally right. We do to those below us in the food chain what those above us do to us. Some may do it with more class than others, but it still amounts to the same thing. Madrid didn't put a gun to Levy's or Bale's head. You think Levy didn't know Bale was going when he spending 100m on players ?

Thank fuck he did, we've built a new team, and it's better than the old one.
