Tottenham youngster Dane Scarlett has had a “really, really impressive” start to life at Portsmouth. That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels. Scarlett, 18, scored his first ever senior goal in Portsmouth’s 1-0 away win at Port Vale on 27 August.

At 18 he can only get better and hopefully a ready successor to Mr. Kane in a couple of seasons. It was the one loan that was necessary as he was never getting any real game time this season. I look forward to watching his progress at Portsmouth during the season.

I watched some highlights of his two excellent goals in a recent match against Peterborough - a near-post header and a fool-the-goalkeeper nutmeg into the near corner. He's visibly bulked up, which is probably just the effect of age and hormones, rather than hammering it in the gym. For the headed goal, he bullied his defender, which he wouldn't have been able to do a year ago.

And they were good finishes rather than hit and hope
