Tottenham player's England credentials

With the World Cup getting closer and closer, I'm really starting to think about which of our players may make it into the final England squad. We have a few that have a very good chance, and surely a few outside bets too. I'd give the following likelihoods:

-King 4/10: Fully fit I think he would be almost a dead cert, but with his injury problems I just don't think Capello will take anyone that can't play two games in a week.

-Woodgate 0/10: He's not going to play for us this season, and so has no chance.

-Dawson 3/10: He seems to be unfashionable with regards to England, despite an incredible season for us. Having not being picked thus far under Capello, I think he has little chance.

-Lennon 7/10: Again, fully fit and he's on the plane, but there have to be some small doubts that he can't regain his form and fitness in time. Having said that, I think he will make it.

-Bentley 4/10: At one point he was in pole position for the right wing role, but now he is probably well down the pecking order. However, with his great form of late, I guess you never know!

-Huddlestone 5/10: This is a tough one. He's been picked before by Capello and has been on great form for us. I think most people think that this is unlikely, but I think he has an outside chance.

-Jenas 2/10: He's been injured and he's also not featured regularly for us. Very unlikely I'd say.

-O'Hara 2/10: He's playing regularly now, and playing well, but I don't think he's even on the radar.

-Crouch 8/10: He's scored many goals for England and has been playing well for us lately, even if he hasn't been scoring very often. With the lack of quality English strikers, I think he is a shoe-in.

Defoe 9/10: If he's fit he's in.

How do people feel about this?

Good thread.

Surely Woodgate and King will not be going. Dawson has been very good this season and is certainly competition for the other centre backs like Upson hoping to make up the numbers.

O'Hara and Jenas aren't going. I'd love to see Huddlestone go and see how he does on the international stage, if fit Lennon goes and Bentleys recent form means he has a chance.

Crouch is certainly doing better than Heskey and Abonglahor (no idea how to spell his name) and with Owen out he alongside Defoe, Rooney and one other should go.

I agree about Huddlestone, it'd be great to see how he gets on on the world stage.

If a couple of Hudd's long range powershots fly in the top corner in the next 9 games, there will be a lot of public and press clamour to include him. But I don't think Fabio will include him unless there are a lot in injuries.

Its strange as being Spurs fans most of us would take Dawson but probably not Crouch.

If Lennon's not fit, its a disaster for England as either Walcott or SWP will play instead.

Defoe - 9/10
Crouch - 8/10
Lennon - 7/10 <--- soon back to fitness  to shine in our upcoming big games
King - 6/10
Daws - 5/10
Hudd - 4/10

My ratings...

Huddlestone won't go as there's too much competition. Capello has ignored the fact Dawson has been playing well previously and will probably continue to. Many pundits have bigged up King and I think Capello may take him to cover for the odd game if Terry/Rio pick up small knocks and then bring in Upson if he needs a replacement for a cluster of games.

Defoe, Crouch, Lennon and King should all go IMO. Probably Dawson too as I can't think of too many decent regular playing English CBs around atm. But people like Shawcross and G Cahill will probs get picked ahead of him! :duh:

IMO The least Spurs players "on the plane" the better. Although Crouch, Defoe and Lennon will all go guaranteed. With Jenas as the only other Spurs player in with a shout. All the rest have no chance, and imo, rightly so.

Dawson - has been amazing for us recently but against quality he seems to come up lacking + a few players infront of him in the pecking order.

King - played only 15 games for us this season and can't play more than 1 game in a week.

Huddlestone - has also been good but too many better players' are in front of him atm.

Bentley -

Why?? The more the better. As individuals, and as people I would love for them to have that kind of experience. Must be every pro's dream to play in a WC and you would be so selfish as to deny them that?

Edit - unless you meant because it will weaken the England team?

I completely agree, I want as many spurs players as possible, a) because playing at the very top level is good for any player, and b) because it will increase my enjoyment of watching the national team.

Me too. Also I think there is an element of truth in the idea that we have some spice boys in the club. If they see and feel the excitement of being at a WC it could help them focus on their football a bit more. Also working with Capello can help anyones career even if they don't get onto the pitch.

I agree with that. And I think we made a major error with Kanoute when we tried to stop him playing for Mali in the ANC - I think it probably damaged his motivation.

I find it amusing that Michael Dawson constantly gets overlooked for the likes of Lescott and Gary Cahill.

Lennon should really be a cert for a starting place if he comes back without any further setbacks. Hudd won't go, Jermain and Crouch will most probably - though I do get the feeling that Jermain could be snubbed again just like 4 years ago. Daws hasn't had a look in thus far, are the likes of Upson, Lescott, Cahill, Shawcross really any better than him? The rest unlikely, Jenas and O'Hara no chance.

Woodgate's got only slightly less of a chance of Capello calling him up now he's out for the season as he did before...

Don't know what Dawson would have to do to get called up, Capello obviously just doesn't rate him... Why else would he constantly call up players from a team staring relegation in the face (Upson), rookies from mid to lower table teams (Shawcross, Cahill) and a guy who's had a very poor season (Lescott)... If Brown didn't play for Man Utd surely he wouldn't get a look in, he's looked out of his depth just about every time he's played for England...

Jenas' chance has probably gone, and to be fair I don't think he deserves a place anyway... It's a bit too early for Huddlestone, but if he carries on his form into next season and there's a few injuries to other central midfielders he might get a chance in the Euro qualifiers...

If they're all fit, Defoe, Lennon and Crouch will go... Can't see anyone else going... Although if Lennon isn't fit, and with Beckham out and Walcott and SWP in fairly rubbish form Bentley could be in with an outside chance...

hopefully none of our players get picked!

But seriously, I reckon Lennon, Defoe and Crouch will go to South Africa.

Ledley King WOULD be worth the risk IMO, Ferdinand and Terry will always be the first choice CB's, but Ledley is the best player to step in after them, FACT.

Can you take the risk on his fitness though??? That's the question for Capello to answer!

I think it's crazy Dawson isn't in the England squad, he's been sensational this year. Lescott's been blundering and Upson has been average in a team that's 17th. I can understand giving a shot to Gary Cahill earlier this season as he's looked very promising but Dawson's been just as good if not better.

Defoe and crouch will go, Lennon should if he gets fit again but might not start if he doesn't get enough practice before, huddlestone and bentley have a chance if they do something special the last few games.

Capello is not going to go for Dawson at this late stage. Huddlestone is not good enough when you consider who is infront of him for CM positions, and many more performances like Saturday's against Portsmouth and he won't be in the Spurs team let alone England.
Probably only Defoe, Crouch and Lennon (if fit) will go.

Defoe and Crouch will be the only two unless Lennon puts in a performance or two in the last few games of the season to prove his place.

The others have hardly got a chance.

Can't believe some of you lot don't want the players to play for England! What's the point of them trying to play their best if they don't get rewarded? It's an honour to represent your country and pulling on the three lions is the highlight of most players career.

Azza, Crouchy and JD are nailed on. Daws and Hudd deserve it too. Bents knows he's got no chance which has probably helped his recent form. Shame JJ got injured at the wrong time.
