Tottenham turn down £16m bid for Hojbjerg

Tottenham Hotspur remain locked in discussions with Atletico Madrid over the sale of midfielder, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

The Danish midfielder is one of a few Spurs players who Ange Postecoglou is open to letting leave. The new Tottenham manager is believed to want more speed and versatility in the middle, meaning Hojbjerg can go.

Unless your a PL or Saudi club, or PSG/Bayern/Real then the ceiling for a squad player is probably £20m this summer. If Ange wants him out, and we can nudge Atletico thereabouts then that's about as good as we'll get, I reckon.

If there is only one buyer then sometimes you have to take what's on offer.
The 1st team squad has to be trimmed , it numbers 33 players but that does include 5 goalkeepers at the moment.

I agree but unless you're willing to take a hit on some players then you are not able to move forward. It's not as if we have an abundance of clubs cueing up to buy any of our players other than Kane.

My point is that selling him will leave us short in CM. For £16m, we're not going to get a a replacement who's close to being good enough, so we'd either be weakening the squad or choosing to divert funds from CB to CM.

Will it leave us short though? Even removing him I'm struggling to see how we have enough minutes without Europe to keep everyone happy.

Bentancur is out with an ACL injury. It remains to be seen when he'll return and how long he'll take to regain form / match fitness.
Sarr will be away for AFCON during Jan/Feb. We don't know what the situation will be with Bentancur at this point.
I'm assuming Ndombele will not be in our squad, as he wasn't even on the bench for either preseason friendly this month.

Maddison & Devine would only play in the more attacking of the three CM roles.
That potentially leaves just Bissouma, Skipp & Lo Celso to cover the no.6 & no. 8 CM roles. Three players for two positions is not much. It leaves us one injury / suspension away from not having a sub and two injuries / suspensions away from having to change formation.

Hojbjerg has been one of the first names on the team-sheet for the past three seasons, so there would need to be a pretty decent reason for selling him for a poxy £16m - certainly a better one than having too many players. Other than Ndombele, it's CBs & fullbacks / wing-backs that we need to offload.
