Villas-Boas still needs to find the best position for Lamela

Lot of positives tonight though, Fredericks looks decent but didn't like his dive

He didn't dive, look closely and you will see that the slight brushing with Anzi player caused him to trip himself up. Wasn't a dive at all, but the result of a chain reaction.

Enjoyed it. Higher tempo pays off again.
Back line was very open but they got away with it
Delighted for Soldado who worked hard and showed his class.
Disappointed for Lamela who wants to shine nearly as much as I want him to shine.
Impressed by Fredericks, like the look of Shaq.C.
Holtby outstanding.
Cheered me up no end.

Much improved performances in our last 2 matches but let us not forget Sunderland are 5 pts adrift at the bottom of the premiership and Anzhi prop up the Russian league having not won a single match in it all season. Liverpool on Sunday will be a real test of our progress. Hopefully we'll see Townsend on the left, Lennon on the right, and Soldado up front. Defoe has 1 goal in his last 14 games against Liverpool.

Soo anyone think Holtby did enough today to get a start in a deeper role?

No, in a CM3 i think he will be good, defensive positioning is not good enough at the moment to put in a 2, maybe in a few years with discipline and composure he could function well in a CM2.
His energy, pressing, vision, passing and finishing is better suited to a role further forward.

That's the same Holtby who is shit, who people have written off and wanted to get shot of.. conveyor belt mentality..
Still do not rate him to be 1st 11 starter, squad player yes. Very good goal, but that should not automatically make him player of the year.

My view is that Holtby runs around looking busy with rear end produc, How many times I saw Dembele clearing and covering for him today.

Holtby is starting to perform like we hoped he would and he's still not quite been here for a year. Remember when everyone was saying he was trying too hard and had only had one good game? Maybe we should give Lamela the benefit of the doubt (as most are anyway) (y)

He needs to develop like Bale did and start on the left and learn that game inside out. Then he can start developing his game as an inverted winger.

As is hes trying to be Bale mark 2 but hes not complete enough to be nearly as effective right now.
I think that's spot on tbh.

However, Townsend has much better feet and touch than Bale did at the same point. There was a moment on about 83' that was equal to what Bale can do in terms of close control even now. Not saying that he'll become as good by any means, but it's a good sign nonetheless. Let's hope he gets developed right.
