Yes I believe it was lennon.
Lets be truthful sunderland looked worse than some of the europa teams.
Lennon has an assist for the crystal palace penalty.
Lamela has one for the cardiff goal.
Lamela may looked lost to you.
But he is not the winger who beats his man with pace and crosses.
He's more pass and go with quick feet.
which is how most of the top teams play.
Man city being an example.
There differing style will suit different teams.
Lamela being more suited to park the bus teams.
Lennon more counter attacking style football.

I agree with most of want you say but stats can be missleading and dont tell the whole story

Does anyone know what that big bang was in the last 5 mins or so? Sounded like it came from the north stand but I couldn't see anything

We heard that, my daughter even looked up from her ipad and said haS A GUN JUST GONE OFF

But how much of the ball to townsend see?
I imagine if lamela had the ball as much, he would created more.

Lamela needs to make himself available and demand the ball more.

If you look at a kid like Fredericks, he didn't look scared. He demanded the ball and was determined to drive and make an impact on the game, Lamela kind of floats around with very little impetus.

The point is there's clearly more to it than just minutes on the pitch. He's had minutes on the pitch, played plenty of games but shown little to suggest he deserves a regular start. Others have forced there way in through performances in the Europa or when given the chance in the league but he has not.

Confidence is obviously the key as the other guy said, but throwing him into the first team as a regular does not mean that his confidence is going to magic out of thin air. He's had games afterall, eight starts and seven subs, and but for one of them that confidence hasn't appeared as anything more than a flicker so far. Indeed, sometimes being played game after game can be counter-productive to an already out of confidence player's form (can't see how City away would have done him much good). A lot of it depends upon being thrown in at the right time.

I suspect work needs to be done on the training ground to get him further involved. More than anything he probably needs a bit of luck, but making an undeserving player a regular is not the answer making him better (Torres?). He has to show a bit more to prove he's worth the spot and in time I'm sure he will. For now he's being eased in which is right.

To be honest Hitch, I don't even agree with your original sentiment that things aren't quite coming off for him.

I think he's doing fine when you examine the overall situation and he's contributing as much as should be expected. He actually provided an assist in the PL after 45 mins of football (made up of three sub appearances), while Townsend's had the season so far to produce almost the same. I also think his integration into the first team has been rightly considered given the contrast of league styles. Only you suggested I said otherwise. My comment referred to an observation not a criticism.

Anyway, I believe your stats are wrong not to mention misrepresented as evidence that he's had enough 'game-time' to find better form. It's 9 starts and 5 sub apps across all comps, however, only starts 2 in the league (the 6-0 mauling by Citeh and the 2-1 win against Fulham) 2 in the Capital One and 5 in the EL (including all the delightful arenas our EL opponents have provided).

You've generously made some presumptions about what I think and ultimately you've argued that his form is going to come from training and probably luck (what in training?) rather playing regular competitive football with with his new team mates.

I'm not sure that his situation is comparable to Torres either. Torres is struggling to recapture the form he possessed several years and injuries ago. It's possible and maybe probable that he just isn't the same player he used to be, when maybe he relied on his explosive athleticism.

That is not Lamela's struggle at all. Our boy is trying to learn how to play in a new league with new team mates and a new coach and in my humble opinion that will only come with playing time. The dynamics of top tier competitive football is quite different to what is learned at the training ground. Fortunately, we have the squad strength to afford him time to do this without throwing him at the deep end and hoping him to be an instant hit.

The boy is getting used to the ruff and tumble of the english game.
He has come from a pas and move team
Personally I think he is trying to hard.
He just needs to relax and enjoy it a bit more.
Still he provided a sublime pass for bobby to score, and nearly scored twice.
He uses the ball very well imo.
If you watch lamela he is always in the box looking to score.
Bobby also had a wonderful chance to repay him the favour when lamela broke and tried a one two with bobby unfortunately bobby chose the wrong option.
Overall not great but needs to do better.

There's been a fair few, Defoe scored 5 (FIVE) against Wigan a couple of years ago for starters....

Although I agree with most of what you say on here, I seriously think you should take a chill pill when it comes to Defoe. I rate him as well but it's getting a bit obsessive, to the point where it's clouding your judgement. I was clearly joking regarding RR!
