Tottenham Hotspur Spurs look forward to first home game, Blues aim to retain top spot

Tottenham will look to put their turbulent start to the season behind them as they host Manchester City on Sunday.

Spurs' opening-day fixture with Everton had to be postponed due to the civil unrest in the area so Sunday's game will be their first Premier League match at home this term.

Tottenham's first game of the season was therefore a 5-0 win away to Hearts in the Europa League last week and when they did manage to get their league campaign started at Manchester United on Monday, Harry Redknapp felt it best to leave out unsettled midfielder Luka Modric.

Chelsea have seen two bids for the Croatian star turned down this summer, with Spurs insisting they will not sell, and with the transfer window almost shut, Redknapp has said he is ready to bring Modric back into action on Sunday.

His return will be a big lift for Spurs after they started their league campaign with an unlikely centre-midfield pairing of Niko Kranjcar and Jake Livermore for Monday's 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford.

By that time, City had already got their season off to a flyer, following up their 4-0 win over Swansea with a 3-2 victory at Bolton to become early leaders.

The big-spending Blues have since maintained the feelgood factor by bringing an end to another of the summer's long-running transfer sagas, securing the signing of Samir Nasri from Tottenham's local rivals Arsenal.

Spurs have been boosted by a signing of their own, with City allowing out-of-favour striker Emmanuel Adebayor to join them on a season-long loan, but he is ineligible for Sunday's game.

The two sides have been rivals for Champions League qualification over the last two campaigns, with Tottenham pipping City in 2009/10 before the roles were reversed last term.

After more big-money buys over the summer, City are setting their sights higher than just Champions League qualification, so Sunday's game will be a test of whether they are now ready to challenge for the title as White Hart Lane is a ground where they have struggled in recent years, taking just two points from their last eight league visits.

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp will make several changes from Thursday night's Europa League game against Hearts having fielded several youngsters in the 0-0 draw.

Despite signing Adebayor in midweek, he will have to wait for his Spurs debut as he cannot face his parent club, but Redknapp has said Modric will feature.

Nasri could make his Man City bow but fellow midfielder Nigel de Jong remains out with a foot problem.

Nasri will be in competition for a starting role with James Milner, who impressed after coming in for De Jong at Bolton last week, with Yaya Toure dropping back into a holding role.

Gael Clichy could come back in for Aleksandar Kolarov at left-back to combat the pace of Aaron Lennon.

Nasri's arrival adds to the array of attacking options available to manager Roberto Mancini, but with both Edin Dzeko and record signing Sergio Aguero having scored two in two, Carlos Tevez is likely to be on the bench due to a lack of match sharpness.

Tottenham's new loan signing Emmanuel Adebayor is ineligible to make his debut against his parent club Manchester City.

Luka Modric will be involved and virus victims, Kyle Walker and Jermaine Jenas, could also return to action.

Manchester City's new signing Samir Nasri is set to make his debut, leaving manager Roberto Mancini with a welcome selection headache.

He has a virtually fully fit squad to pick from with only Nigel de Jong out.

The season may only be at the hors d'oeuvres stage. But this could be a veritable feast of football.

Some of City's play at Bolton was sumptuous. David Silva was beguiling. He ghosts away from markers, drifting in from wide positions to control so much of their tempo, and could be one of the stars of the season if he keeps up his current form. What a difference a few months have made to Edin Dzeko too; £27 million looked like a waste of money last season, but now he has scored five goals in five games.

City are looking for a sixth top-flight win on the spin for the first time since February 1978. This is the sort of game that will signpost their title credentials. Spurs have won 11 of the last 14 league encounters between the sides, so if City win even their most dubious fan may start to believe this could be their year.

Two seasons ago Tottenham pipped City for the last Champions League slot. Now Roberto Mancini's men are being talked about as genuine title challengers, with Spurs still stuck in the same slog for a top-four place.

Tottenham will be stung by that sort of comparison. Up until injuries exposed the squad's strength last season they played some great stuff.

Make no mistake, they can win this one. It'll be a real test of City's steel and resolve. I'll go for Tottenham to hit back and take the points, with a set-piece goal settling what should be a really tasty Sunday lunch-time banquet.

Head-to-head

  • Tottenham have won 19 Premier League matches against Manchester City. Only Arsenal, with 20, have beaten City on more occasions.
  • Spurs have beaten City in 11 out of their last 14 matches in the league, but lost their last encounter 1-0 at the City of Manchester Stadium in May.
  • Eight of the last 13 Premier League matches between the sides have ended 2-1.
  • Want-away striker Carlos Tevez scored more league goals (21) last season than Tottenham strikers Jermain Defoe (4), Peter Crouch (4), Roman Pavlyuchenko (9) and Robbie Keane (0) combined.

Tottenham Hotspur

  • Spurs lost just one league match at home last season, a record bettered by only Manchester United. However, they drew nine games at White Hart Lane, which was the highest tally in the league.
  • Spurs won just three of their final 12 league games last season.
They have kept just one clean sheet in their last nine top-flight matches.
  • They scored 15 goals from outside the box last season, four more than any other side.
  • On Monday, Brad Friedel recorded his 267th consecutive Premier League appearance. He last missed a game in May 2004.
  • According to Opta stats, since 2008-09 Spurs have won 43% of their league games when want-away midfielder Luka Modric has been playing, versus 52% without him

Manchester City

  • City have won seven of their last eight league matches.
  • They have gone 18 league and cup games without a draw (excludes Community Shield).
  • Joe Hart kept 18 clean sheets last season, the highest tally in the division.
  • They have won five games in a row for only the second time in the Premier League.
  • Manchester City have conceded at least two goals in six of their last eight Premier League away games.

Why the negativity? Play how we did against United for the first 60 minutes, plus a bit of craft from Modric in the middle and we'll be fine. I can see us winning, I'm confident.

City have an amazing squad but that doesn't make them a team, willing to give 100% for each other as we do. Consequently I forecast a 2-1 win for the mighty Spurs with VDV and J.D. scoring a goal apiece.

People creaming over City when they've already faced the mighty Swansea and Bolton. Yes they're better, improved etc, but United still gave them a lesson in the CS.

Modric plays and we'll not get beat, and hopefully win.

I'm going 2-1 as well....VDV, and Kaboul.

People are starting to think that when you play City that you play their squad and not 11.

Any team that has Lescott in it is always going to be vulnerable.

Really looking forward to this. Hope the crowd get behind the team and kick start the season. We are going to need to battle hard for the next 9 months, let the battle start tomorrow.

Normally really look forward to these games (or any game for that matter) but really think we could get well beaten today. Negative towards it, very unusually

I was more confident away to United...

Am normally optimistic due to our great record against City but they are a different animal these days.

Draw at best.

fancy VDV to have a great game - he loves the big matches. don't see us losing today, but reckon it could be a draw. 2 - 2. just hoping we have some points on the board by the end of the day.

I'll be happy with a draw tbh and that says it all for me. I have seen all of Citys matches this year and even if they have only played Swansea and Bolton they truly are a different beast this year. I honestly think they will win the PL.

So 1 point and I'll be happy.

I'll be happy with a point. IMO our season starts the first time none of Crouch, Pav, or Defoe start in front of Rafa.
