I can't remember ever seeing crowds like this on the Grand Depart. Or on many stages.

Great finish that. I think Kittel will the sprint competition overall

Hopefully Cav's ok, but that looks like his collarbone gone. Last year it was Greipel wiping him out on the Grand Depart, now Gerrans cut him up. There's only so long Prudhomme can start with sprint stages to try and get Cav a yellow jersey.

So annoyed for Cav again. Doesn't help he lost his main lead out guy and then gets trapped in a no win situation which results in him crashing out again.

Hope it's not a collarbone but it looked to me that all the impact from the crash was on his shoulder and how he cycled over the line suggested a collarbone injury. :(

Well that'll be why Cav crashed if the dough faced prick is there. Curses every British sports person/team.

Apparently the OPQS doctor has said Cav hasn't broken his collarbone.

Omega Pharma - Quick-Step Cycling Team confirms that Mark Cavendish underwent further examination on his right shoulder after today's crash.

The imaging underlined ligament ruptures with an AC-joint dislocation, which causes him a lot of pain. A final decision on his participation in tomorrow's stage will be taken tomorrow morning.

Ouch.

I'm going to see it tomorrow morning. Not really into cycling but it's not like it happens very often. Hopefully we'll have some good weather

Gerrans "cut him up" because Cav was pushing him across the road and into the Europcar rider who when Gerrans went down did brilliantly to avoid the crash and create an absolutely massive pile-up. Cav brought this on himself.

I'll be amazed if he starts tomorrow but then again I was also wrong about Neymar's injury.

Cav was leaning his head into Gerrans because Gerrans just completely cut across into his line.

Apparently OPQS said he'd continue as long as he hadn't broken anything, but I'd be surprised if he did continue. But then Gerraint Thomas rode almost the entirety of last year's Tour with a fractured pelvis.

Bollocks. If that was the case then Cav wouldn't have issued this apology. He brought this 100% on himself.

"I'm gutted about the crash today" Cavendish said. "It was my fault. I'll personally apologise to Simon Gerrans as soon as I get the chance. In reality, I tried to find a gap that wasn't really there .I wanted to win today, I felt really strong and in a great position to contest the sprint thanks to the unbelievable efforts of my team. Sorry to all the fans that came out to support - it was truly incredible."

I suggest you watch it again. Gerrans moves out to pass one of the Canondale riders, and in moving back runs right into Cav's line. Cav leans his head into Gerrans at the same time Coquard is coming round Gerrans, who gets squeezed between the two of them. Neither Cav nor Gerrans are blameless, but if Gerrans doesn't cut him up Cav doesn't have to try and nudge him back out of his line.

But Cav gets blamed for every crash he's involved in. Take the one with Veelers last year for example. Similar situation, yet Cav got all the blame. At least if Cav does ride tomorrow he shouldn't get piss thrown at him.

I have seen it again and I honestly don't see what Gerrans possibly does wrong there. He is behind Sagan and moves out to try to pass him, yes, but Cav then moves in behind Sagan and I don't see any attempt from Gerrans to move back in there. I suggest you watch it again or we just agree to disagree.

And Cav gets blamed because of the way he leans in to the man next to him, which he should be punished even harder for IMO.

Anyone feeling that it wouldn't be a bad thing if froome doesn't win? Great rider but just don't like the guy, ever since he played the 'big un' as a domestique during wiggins year...plus his bike has more of a personality

I don't disagree but maybe it's because we went from Wiggins being the team leader at Sky to Froome and the difference in personality in front of the camera couldn't be further apart that makes me feel a bit meh towards Froome.

My problem is Contador is probably his closest challenger and I'd rather have my eyes gouged out with a rusty spoon than she him win it.

It would be a terrible thing, I just ordered a Dossard Un t-shirt from Rapha.
