Our average finish is tenth with a standard deviation of 3 places. Were the two 5th places finishes just us overachieving? Are we now feeling the bump that many teams experience after a short successful period?

2007/2008 11
2006/2007 5
2005/2006 5
2004/2005 9
2003/2004 14
2002/2003 10
2001/2002 9
2000/2001 12
1999/2000 10
1998/1999 11
1997/1998 14
1996/1997 10
1995/1996 8
1994/1995 7
1993/1994 15
1992/1993 8

We could have grabbed 4th on the last day of the 2005/2006 season but although this would have improved our standing it wouldn't instantly transform us into a top team, as Everton demonstrated that year. So what should be our (achieveable) goals based on our past league performances?

I don't think those figures are shocking at all

that average finish of tenth is entirely in line with our post-war average (I think slightly better, as the post-war average is 10.7 I believe)

that post-war average puts as the 5th most consistent team in the whole of England, a tremendous achievement

the more recent figures will probably have us as 8th, (I expect Villa Toffees & Toon to have just shaded us)

however in that time we have won two trophies, villa two, toffees 1 and toon zero

we have been in three, probably now four finals, villa 3 (from memory)

we've also been in a lot more semi-finals than villa (from memory)

thus if we go on to win this year's lge cup that will make us the 5th most successful club of the Premiership era in the whole of England which again is a tremndous achievement

Also I don't think football should be dated by the Prem era

to me decades are far more reliable and with some eleven months remaining of this one, we have three trophies already to Villa's 2 over the past two decades,

plus our third place in 1990 10th in 91 15th in 92 will boost our league average a little (not much , but slightly better than 10th overall :)

so what should be our realistic goal?

continuing as an ever present in the Prem- only 7 teams can claim that in the whole of English football

winning at least one trophy per decade

our record of having done this for the past six decades is only matched/bettered by one other team - UTD (who top us with 7 decades in a row)

continuing to play good football - our record on this over the years is a very proud one

and in the next five years finally finishing top 4 again - that's been a let down

probably by the time we do it it won't be as significant as it currently is

my own personal hope is we get taken over by a benevolent billionaire and win the title, but I can't see that one happening

Does that mean Christmas is cancelled?

Back on topic, we're still up there with the top 6 teams in the league.

Nothing strange about those stats and we thoroughly deserved the two 5th place finishes as we were excellent those 2 seasons

We are also currently about where we deserve to be. This is mainly due to the fact of selling 60 odd goals in the summer and the pathetic Didier Zokora in CM

In theory, not. But Levy's been as trigger-happy as Sugarlump, and one gets the impression that he's taken the wrong advice from the wrong 'football people' at the wrong time.

I know you're only paraphrasing but the traditional English interpretation of the Aristotle quote goes "One swallow does not a summer make" rather than "doesn't make a summer" - yes I know, I'm a pedant.
