Lads Beat Barca

Our Academy beat Barcelona on Sunday to reach the final of the Bellinzona Tournament in Switzerland.

Steven Caulker (pictured) headed home the only goal of the semi-final after 20 minutes to set-up a final tie against Sporting Lisbon on Monday.

Coach Alex Inglethorpe described the win as one if the best for our Academy in tournament football. "It's certainly right up there," he said on Sunday night.

"Barcelona have one of the best Academy set-ups in the world and regularly produce players for their first team.

"You have to take into account that we're one of the youngest squads out here and that we're without the likes of Andros Townsend and Jon Obika (on loan at Yeovil). We started against Barcelona with two Under-16 players in what is in effect an Under-20 tournament. It was a very big scalp for us.

"We started brightly, dominated and that's what we wanted to do.

"I thought we were good value for the lead. Kudos Oyenuga dragged a chance wide but we took the lead after 20 minutes when Steven Caulker powered home a header from Ryan Mason's corner.

"We had chances after that and then defended magnificently - Oscar Jansson did not have a save to make.

"In fact, we had another chance to make it 2-0 right at the end but Nathan Byrne was denied by the goalkeeper.

"It was a fantastic achievement and a superb performance but we don't want to get to the final and lose it. We'll do everything we can to win it."

Sporting Lisbon beat Paraguay side Guarany 3-0 in Sunday's second semi-final.

Spurs: Jansson, Smith, Cox, Parrett, Caulker, Butcher, Byrne, Kasim, Oyenuga, Mason, Kane (Ekim, 50).

Presuming Bostock is injured. No M'poku either.

Mason, Parrett, Byrne and Nicholson are all in the reserve squad tonight, so presumably they will be missing at least the opening fixture.

What a shame! I'm in Switzerland now, albeit the French part, but I've got work so I can't go down. I would love to see the U19's

That's with so much of our squad out, whether on loan or in our reserve game yesterday, so we fielded four U16s for their debuts and it seems like they all performed admirably. Well done young Spurs :)

I really hope we draw against Barcelona, it would be amazing to play them - and beat them of course :)

Comolli did an excellent job with the youth, not sure that was ever in question. But he did get a lot wrong with the first team.

it is a shame we couldn't keep Commoli on. I think he did a fantastic job.

Our Academy take on Barcelona in the semi-finals of the Torneo Internazionale in Bellinzona, Switzerland, on Sunday.

The lads guaranteed qualification into the last four by winning their first two group matches on Thursday and Friday and eventually finished second after losing 1-0 against Dinamo Bucharest on Saturday.

That means they face Group Two winners Barcelona.

"We've been in tournaments with Barcelona but always seem to miss playing each other," said coach Alex Inglethorpe.

"It will be a great test for us up against one of the best Academy set-ups in world football."

Alex was disappointed to lose the final group stage match against Dinamo Bucharest on Saturday and described it as a 'wake-up call'.

The only goal of the game came just before half-time. "Conditions weren't great but I felt we could have adapted better," said Alex.

"We didn't create much, we huffed and puffed but there weren't a lot of chances. It was a scrappy game and a scrappy performance.

"I was disappointed because although we'd already qualified, we wanted to win all three matches.

"The plus points were the performance of Mirko Ranieri in goal, he made three or four tremendous saves and the fact that we managed to utilise a lot of the squad in this game. We've a very young squad and that was important."

Spurs: Ranieri, Nicholson, Cox (Smith, 31), Ekim, Caulker (Kane, 31), Durojaiye, O'Neill, Carroll, Mason (Oyenuga, 31), Waller-Lassen, Parrett (Kasim, 31).
