UEFA's proposal for a safety net for Europe's biggest clubs if they miss out on Champions League qualification would have propelled Arsenal and Tottenham back into the lucrative competition in recent years, even though they did not qualify.

Do they not realise the fact you can drop out of it is a huge leveler across the leagues

It isn't about a leveler, it's about big teams playing other big teams but not calling it a breakaway Super League. Why would Real want to play Huesca and Eibar if they can play Arsenal and Spurs?

Don't get me wrong I think it's a shit idea and in the long run I think the top level game will suffer from extreme fatigue and people will get tired of the same teams playing the same teams all the time, but there's a very obvious reason why Real, Barca and Juve in particular are pushing for it.

Completely agree.

Interesting your final point about people getting bored of it. I've always felt the same. The thing the greedy suits don't seem to realise is that a big part of what makes big games special is that they don't happen very often. If they ever do make this super League thing you'll be playing the big teams every week and meeting e.g. Barca twice a year at least so the novelty will wear off very quickly for most people IMO. They'll effectively turn these massive blockbuster fixtures into just another arbitrary game no different to when we play someone like Villa or Newcastle nowadays.

Maybe... But you only have to look across the pond to the NFL to see what they're aiming for.

American sports' regular seasons aren't comparable at all. The saving grace of US sport is the Playoffs.

This is what I think the big clubs just don't get.

Good to see resistance from the leagues. I particularly like the bundesliga chiefs response:

«The brutal truth is that a few of these so-called super clubs are in fact poorly-managed, cash-burning machines that were not able, in a decade of incredible growth, to come close to a sustainable business model. »

Makes you glad to have a Levy really. The football industry needs to cool a little and it’s so obvious that this is being pushed by Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus - poorly run clubs who have run out of ways to print money in their smaller leagues.

Yeah I know we're losing money during the covid era which is extremely painful given we just built a new stadium but from the outside it seems we're still so well run on that front that if we hang on through this period we'll come out healthier than the majority.

What's the deal with Juventus?

I'm personally disappointed that the PL is opposed to reducing the number of teams in it to 18.

I can't answer for Juve except that Andrea Agnelli has been probably the biggest driving force for any and all Super League projects. Again in Italy like in Spain you get games against your Beneventos and Spezias that aren't attractive games and Juve's outlay putting on games like that probably cost more than what they make from them.

But in terms of the PL it's a lot simpler to explain. The PL is an organisation made up of the 20 clubs that partake any given season, in addition to a chief executive of some kind which is a purely administrative role, and all 20 have a more or less equal say. And as big resolutions require a 2/3 majority to pass, you simply won't get 14 out of 20 to vote to relegate extra teams and shrink the league, as much as I too would like to see it.

I heard this on TS yesterday. So a 7th placed English club can go straight into the group stage ahead of the Champions of a "smaller" league like the Danish, Swiss or Scottish leagues.

Absolutely disgusting idea from UEFA. These clubs have earned the right to participate as they are the elite from their own countries, regardless of the perceived strength of their leagues. If you've finished 7th in the PL, you haven't earned the right for that season, whether you're better than the team from a weaker league or not.

It was bad enough that finishing 4th got you a place, but 7th?
Football continues to embarrass itself with the naked greed that pervades the game.
