Absolutely SPOT ON

Verts get put on his ass, is outpaced and out muscled game after game against good oppo and still people on here think he's the bollox haha

As said all our defenders bar Walker cannot compete at the top level because they are not quick enough, strong enough or positionally aware enough. Or all 3!!!!!

Kaboul before his injury was also at that level but is now a shell of himself

Walker has great pace and power which gives him a huge advantage and more often than not gets him out of trouble where others can't

I'd like to see Dier at centre back when Walker comes back. Hopefully he'll look decent

Oh how we miss Ledley. Different class

Transfer-list Vertonghen and see how many top sides go in for him.

This thread is the epitome of why fan forums are so incredibly subjective and, ultimately, nowhere near the mark.

tim sherwood:

"Vertonghen is so poor. Can't move his feet. He can't defend, this guy."

From what i saw Sherwood is spot on. Kaboul has been caught out in similar situations and a shit-storm erupts on here. Verts was slow footed and should have done as lot better in my opinion. In that situation he truly could not defend that player leading to the goal.

Yeah they’ll be queuing up just like they were last summer!!!!!!!

No TOP club will want him. He's not a good enough defender

In this season alone I've seen Kompany, Terry and Varane ALL turned like that - it is simply something that can happen when you are run at that many times in a game.

He's going to have individual errors of course but he's still easily our best CB by a long fuckin' way.

Maybe so, but still correct in his summing up of that particular play. Only those who hate for hate's sake could see that summing up as not being spot on.

Possibly about that situation but if he says...

"Vertonghen is so poor. Can't move his feet. He can't defend, this guy."

Indicates to me that he is talking about Vert as a whole and not specific to that situation.

So yeah.....he's a fucking idiot.

I agree with this but also think we look better now with The Faz on board.

62 caps for arguably the most exciting and upcoming international side in European football bar the World Champs?

Nah, let's get Caulker back.

We do, plus a lot of our defensive mistakes are coming from blatant individual errors (again) or from positions where midfielders are not providing significant backup.

Would I like someone like Thiago Silva next to Verts instead? Of course I would. We have to be realistic with our wage budget and the lack of exciting CB prospects coming through the Academy in the next couple of years.

Moreno in January would be an interesting acquisition.

He's saying he cannot defend the attacker. He's not saying that Verts can be defended in that situation. Whichever way you look at it Verts defended poorly in that situation, and was off the pace and off balance.

I see no wrong in giving an honest opinion. If you didn't expect anything else from Sherwood then don't read the article. We all know what we get with him and that's an honest opinion that for all sane fans on here who watched the game could see that Verts fucked up last night. I have seen Kaboul get slaughtered on here for less, but because it's Sherwood saying it as it clearly is, there's a shit-storm for no good reason.

The problem is that so many of you total dick faces expect perfection from a centre back, or any defender. Guess what? Players lose the ball, occasionally they mis-control it, sometimes they mistime a tackle. The fact is, and it is a fact, Vertonghen is actually a very good player and many of you are idiots.

Being a defender for Spurs must be the most thankless task ever. Do you people actually watch any other football? Kompany isn't perfect, he fouls, teams score, get over yourselves.

Things like this are much further amplified now that everyone can stream 90 mins of every single game for free, no matter where you are.

Every single minute of football becomes a reactionary evaluation and application of rationality is thrown through the fucking window.

Of course everyone makes mistakes or gets done. It's the world class ones that get done the least and make the fewest mistakes. At his best I could count the number of times Ledley got done in the space of about 5 seasons on 1 hand

I want Verts to be a very good CB but unfortunately he gets done far too many times to be one.

Sorry for wanting the best for Tottenham and another Rsol or Ledley but none of our current CB's come close

Seriously? Rsol made a career out of making massive fuck ups and getting back and clearing up the mess that he caused. As for Ledley, he too made mistakes, I remember one game which he made 3 or 4 and it came out afterwards that he was injured and had no option but to play (no doubt not helping his own health later on). Verts isn't yet on their level, but lets be honest, if Ledley had stayed fit he would have gone to another club for big cash.

We all want what's best for Spurs, but needlessly picking at the stronger members of the squad is just pointless. Are the same people calling for Hugo to go?

Hugo has a great attitude and body language....Verts is waiting for his next move and I think that has shown is his performances this season. He isn't the same player anymore.

How exactly do you portray wanting to move to another team or city with just your body language?

That's quite a feat, I think most professional mimes would struggle with that.
