Brilliant quote from Sherwood there, good to see him sticking up for his player

We forgive him for that and move on. Show us quality performances on the pitch. Start with a great performance vs Man City.

Don't think any athlete should get to the point were they can't stand.

Also he's lucky he didn't slam the girls face down on that railing.

I still don't see the funny side of this particularly..and I don't think this is me being dull etc, I just think it's poor form personally and you should make sure you are in the best physical condition you can be for training and preperation as well as match day. I also don't find the manager making a joke about it impressive when he could just say it's not an issue and he is talking to Vlad in private. But I am definitely in the minority it seems, so perhaps i'm being critical for criticsms sake.

what Sherwood actually said...

“I did see that, yes,” said a bemused but unfazed Sherwood. “I’ve fallen over in the snow before and all.

“He’s had a weekend off and he’s got to play well on Wednesday.

“No (he will not face a fine), he wasn’t breaking any rules.

“For his own sake you wish he didn’t (do it).

“He was unsteady on his legs by the looks of it; it must have been windy over there.”

@absolute bobbins Which bit do you disagree with, just out of interest?

I'm not suggesting you haven't been ... this is NOT a dig! But have you ever been in peak peak physical condition? Like pro athelete fit? You can drink a glass and a 1/2 of wine and be like that!

Perhaps he should "Romania" and not go home when there's no game for a week.

Probably just go on the razz in London though.

No, no I most certainly havent! Does that make it right though, he fell over with no control-could have rolled his ankle etc...I just don't think it is right to be in that state during the season personally. I just think it's irresponsible. Just my opinion.

Yeah i hear you, but honestly man it can take you by suprise. I haven't been fit like that either in my life, but a good friend is often, he does triathlons and ultra marathons and that, and when he's in his training regime even though he is careful, sometimes the slightest drink just takes the legs out from under him and he is a mess.

I think we can put this down to a mistake tbh!

Not the part about you being dull ;)

Seriously though, I feel that it is far too easy to over react to something like this, he was on a club sanctioned break, his body will metabolise alcohol far quicker than the average SC'r so any effects would have long left his system.

Vlad is obviously going to get a pasting from Spurs fans for any slight mistake he makes, even if Dawson (or whoever) makes worse errors.
As most know, I don't like Tim but he's got it absolutely right this time, he's taken pressure off and disarmed the journalists who clearly wanted to make a full blown story of this just by having benefit of having the sports science department giving Vlad and all the players the once over.

I'll also add my experience, I'm not claiming to be as fit as a professional footballer but I'm a relatively competitive triathlete (despite being a hefty 81kg) and I've been known to get pretty damn tipsy after work on a Thursday night then race on the Saturday or Sunday suffering no ill effects. I might be special but I'm probably not, it's my experience that the better condition you're in, the faster your body processes and expels toxins

Exactly, what are we going to do, Ban all players from doing anything that could remotely injure them - No going out in the snow, plastic scissors, install non slip bath mats in all of their showers?

It was his weekend off!

Yes I understand that, and I have already said that it is not the bioggest issue. But I am surprised at the amount of people who find it amusing or accept it as simply ok. Alcohol can effect your sleep cycle and therefore retention of new instruction/knowledge-we're preparing for a game where he HAS to remember strict instruction in split seconds. Alcohol effects the energy due to glucose production, he has to train and compete for his place. Before a game against a team we lost 6-0 I would have just wanted that little bit professionalism in being in the very very best condition, that's all.

When was this? Friday night? Saturday night? He was still in Romania and most likely didnt train the following day. Im sure he will have more than enough sleep and our medical / food staff will prepare him all the right foods and diet he needs to be at his best physically tonight.

Nobody was preparing anything on the weekend for the City game - i dont understand how you dont find this funny!

This is the bit I like. Vlad really won't want to fuck up tonight.

I find it strange how the drinking culture is just accepted in football. When you consider the advancements in every area in the last 20 years using sports science to get every possible edge on opponents, it seems bizarre to me how something like alcohol is allowed to prevent these athletes getting in peak shape.

When you compare the professional outlook and commitment most other sports have towards drinking during competition season it just seems irresponsible that it just widely seem as acceptable behaviour for people, who are after all, athletes.

I agree, why spend millions of pounds on technology driven conditioning/sport science set ups and employ nutritionists and doctors etc etc to give the players that edge in physical conditioning if you do this during the season..?
