A brief insight to Walter

An article about our fallen heroes from 90 years ago.

I do hope the club has plans to honour Walter Tull in some way, a statue would be fitting. Maybe plans are in place when the new stadium gets built to honour the spurs players that fought and died for their country.

I was only telling someone in the office about him the other day.

Truly remarkable story, I would say it was almost a perfect story for the big screen to be honest.

I will make sure to watch.

Good spot mate.

Thanks for that info Spursphil.
Repping you.

I never tire of documentary /archive stuff from The Great War.
My maternal Grandfather's brother (my grand uncle ?) was a machine gunner who died at Arras in 1916. I saw his medals in the 1960's when I was a kid but someone in the family donated the medals and stuff for display in Mt Mellary Monastery, Waterford Ireland, a fews years went by and it was found the monks flogged them to raise funds.
He was Southern Irish but rallied to the flag.
Walter Tull is part of the Spurs family, looking forward to seeing the doc.

A remarkable story about a remarkabe man.

If he was the 2nd professional black footballer, signed by Tottenham in 1908 who was the 1st and in which year?

I'm pretty sure your family will be able to get replacements. Check out Google or Yellow Pages. The MOD itself won't replace lost medals unless they've been stolen or destroyed (and then only WWII or later) but there are several reputable companies that supply replicas.

Back to Walter Tull, it's an inspiring and tragic story that would make a great movie; not only was he one of the first black pro footballers, he was one of a tiny handful (at most) of blacks who were commissioned in British, as opposed to Colonial, regiments and led British troops. Well spotted, Phil.

Cheers SS,
I shall contact my cousin "Dr Jim" in Ireland again and tell him, he is the oldest of all my 50 odd cousins and kinda like the 'Alpha' of our echelon of erstwhile brats.

Very interesting stuff. I too am fascinated by stories from both wars and will be forever greatful to those who gave their lives for the freedom we enjoy today.

A couple of weeks ago I went over to Ypres for the weekend purely to see Menin Gate and the cemeteries and battle fields of WW1. It's a humbling experience and one that I'll always remember. Seeing all the names of those who fell, but have no known grave really puts things into perspective.

There have been rumours for a long time about a film, you can actually read one of the screen plays by a guy called Phil Avillis on his website. I think at one time Noel Clarke who is a young british actor/director (you may all know him from the film Adulthood) was attached.

I really hope that someday someone gets a film made because I really its a story that needs to be told.

This guy is a bonifide British hero and it's a shame so few people know of him and his story.

Film being produced about Walter Tull's life

By Phil Vasili Wednesday, 21st June 2006

Two years ago Rangers beat Spurs to win the Walter Tull Trophy. Now there is to be a film made about one of the Britain's best players.

Now there is to be a film made about one of the Britain's best players who should have been a Gers great but who played a game for the club after being sent to the frontline after agreeing to train and sign for the club while stationed in Scotland during military training.

Want to invest and/or become an extra in the film?

"Tull", is in pre-production with Noel Clarke - Mickey Smith in Dr Who; Sam in Kidulthood - as Tull and Ray Winstone's daughter, Jaime Winstone - Kidulthood - playing his Suffragette lover Annie.

We have the full support of the Tull family and official backing of the Professional Footballers Association.

We feel the film will be groundbreaking in many ways: apart from being the first Black outfield player in the first division, Tull was the first Black officer in the British Army, dying at the Second Battle of the Somme after being recommended for a Military Cross (which he never received); it will highlight the UK's rich and varied multi-cultural past; it will be the first film to portray a real-life Black British sporting and military hero; and will be a timely addition to the forthcoming celebrations in 2007 of the abolition of slavery in Britain in 1807; and the Olympics in 2012.

And a good part of it will feature Rangers and Glasgow during the First World War.

This will be the first screenplay that has as its lead a real Black British hero. It does not appeal immediately to traditional investors in this industry. However, having been involved in this field for a while, I have no doubt that this project will be a great success, given the script and the creative and production team we have. (Move over Chariots of Fire!)

We are actively trying to approach Premiership footballers to form an investment consortium and we are in talks with the representative of one player who would like to get into acting. There are a number of such potential casting opportunities.

Would you like to investigate the possibility of playing a part in this film? There are a number of tax-deductable schemes that investors can use, as individuals and groups. We can advise on this. And/or your investment could be used to secure a role as an extra.

If you would like any further information please dont hesitate to contact me.

That article was from 2006, I suppose you could try and see if those numbers are still live and give ol' Phil a call for an update. Looks as if it was all dependent on funding.
