Problem was, is and always has been.
We don't have a good captain. (Forget the King debate and all that 'leading by example BS)
Of all the priorities for the summer spending, for me THIS is the top of the list.

It's actually not nonsense at all.

Without Ledley, who is our softly spoken leader, there really are none on the pitch.

If you look at United, for example, they've got Neville, Ferdinand, Scholes, Giggs, Rooney ... all those players lead the team. Stand up to be counted. Keano tries - but we've got no 'Gerrard' type in midfield who can grab the game by the balls and get the other fuckers to perform too.

It's not nonsense at all. It's the actual problem we have.

Amen lads.

We need another Davids - a never say die, second isn't good enough, proven winner. He wasn't that great a player for us a lot of the time, but his influence on the team was huge.

Read my post again, and actually try and take the words in this time. I can't be bothered to re-type it. Or just get your head looked at. Yeah.

I have, and it is still bolloxs.

We need a leader, end of. There is a hell of a difference between a consistent midfield performer and a leader.

I think most posters on this thread would agree.

To be honest, everytime i read the topic of this post, i have that annoying 80's song come into my head, I Need A Hero by Bonnie Tyler, but in my head I change hero for leader... Oh is that just me then?.. I'll get me coat.

I agree we need a leader. I'd like to see a midfield general like Appiah playing for us. (I know he's ill but I've been championing him since he joined Juve many moons ago)

We need someone who, like StevieG of Livers, can boss a game, control the pace, dominate the centre, and when the team is playing shit grab the game by the scruff of the neck and shake it about until we are better.

Not many of those out there unfortunately.

Stephen Gerrard has never bossed a game, is utterly incapable of controlling the pace, or dominating the centre. What he does do is step up at big moments and score or create crucial goals that change the course of the match. The Cup final victories v Milan and West Ham are perfect examples of this. In both games he was a non-entity for about 95% of the match, but came up with big moments to pull Liverpool level.

That is so wierd I'm getting exactly the same thing! All day yesterday as well, I had to restrain from singing it!

Back on topic, we do need a leader. I really want us to sign a hard man type who's gonna demand respect. Not an idiot like a Vinnie Jones type, but someone who you know doesn't take any crap and will let the rest of the team know when they're not pulling their weight.

I'm a big fan of O'Hara and feel that with the right midfield partner he could improve alot. Possibly even into a 1st choice as we push for top 4. He's quite small and weak for a midfielder, I think he could do with getting on the weights a bit. Other than that, he's got a fantastic attitude and very good technique when striking the ball. Its players like him and Kaboul who I hope we stick with and let them develop some more before we cut our losses. We only have to look around the premiership to see players who have been questionable in their 1st/2nd season(s) and then finally something clicks and they become consistant pemiership performers. Who would have thought Flamini would ever have a season like he's had this year?

Where have all the good men gone
And where are all the gods?
Where’s the street-wise Hercules
To fight the rising odds?

Isn’t there a white knight upon a fiery steed? - its a sign!
Late at night I toss and I turn and I dream of what I need

WE need a LEADER!
I'm holding out for at hero 'till the end of the night
He's gotta be strong
And he's gotta be fast
And he's gotta be fresh from the fight

I think the key is we need a leader in midfield, not in the team as a whole. berbatov and keane could both be said to be creative leaders in the strikeforce and king and woodgate and potentially hutton can do the same in defense. But our midfield at the moment lacks consistent shape to do either job. I think you need three leaders and the midfielder one is the most important, which is why despite great strikers and on paper a superb defence, we can't seem to make it work consistently.

Gattuso would be a dream. Modric would be nice too as he's a creative leader like Fabregas. Ideally, the both of them. Then we'd be talking.

We have one but we don't use him as such, he has been showing his abilities but since he is not as fancy as Berba or Keane people tend to overlook him - Steed. He wins balls, he backtracks, he can play through balls, and most of all he never stops, he's got the highest work rate in the team. He needs to play in the middle of the park. In the game agaisnt Boro up till his substitute he was MOTM IMO and we just owned them afterwards everything just fell apart. I can't understand why Ramos keeps playing Jenas and Zokoraat the same time, when we are 4-4-2, as they both tend to play in front of the defence.

one isnt enough though, we need a midfield that will work together, and i do agree Steed has been the best midfielder this season (though has droped a little bit latley in some games) IMO the midfield just dont link up well or work hard enough as a unit, that isnt saying certain plaeyrs dont work there arses off, but at times they work hard for no reason as someone else isnt doing what they are meant to be doign which results in an easy pass or a easy way to run, so wasted energy which ends up taknig a toll on our fitness levels

also still dont like JJ and zokora playing in the same team, just dont think it works well enough

We need someone with a 'never say die' attitude and the belief that you can always come back to win a game.

You need a track record to support this kind of mentality so I think medals matter.
